The THEATREVIEW Award for Best Review Quote of the Year….

"Going to the theatre is an experience. Some companies even have a Customer Experience Manager who monitors the entire occasion from beginning to end. It's not just what happens on the stage but the journey to the theatre, the cost and convenience of car parking, finding a meal nearby, the welcome at the box office, the cleanliness of the toilets, the smile from the usher, the ambience of the theatre, the glass of wine during the interval, the ease of departure, the air conditioning, the whole kit and caboodle that makes going to the theatre a joy or a nightmare.

I've been critical of The Basement in the past but not this time. The box office experience is always pleasant and this continued to be the case with Eigengrau. A smile costs nothing and the one I was greeted with was warm and welcoming. The quick pit stop at the Ladies was almost a revelation. Everything was pristine clean and fresh as a daisy.

The usher was sweet and the theatre, to be frank, the most pleasant surprise I've had in a performance space for a long time. There was no hint of the old dust and grime; the smell of fresh paint sat lightly in the air, the walls were gleaming from a spanking new paint job and the whole place looked delightfully revamped." - Lexi Matheson reviews "Eigengrau"

What a year! Here are my nominations:

The SOUTH PACIFIC PICTURES Award for Best Break Up of the Year...

George Henare and Geraldine Brophy in Awatea. There was tears, dribble and emotional moans. It was Intense with a capital I.

The AUCKLAND ACTORS Award for Best Entrance of the Year...

Sam Snedden in The Pride –  so Aryan, so strict.

The operator I spoke to in Call Cutta in a Box

Trygve Wakenshaw in Constantinople – He kept making an entrance for 2 minutes.

The ELEPHANT PUBLICITY Award for Best Poster of the Year...

Black Confetti. The playwright on the poster. Awesome.

The Armstrong Creative Award for Best Technical ***k up of the Year...

I only saw smooth running shows this year.

The GAIL COWAN MANAGEMENT Award for Best Actress/Actor Playing a Character with a Disability/Medical Condition of the Year...

Virginia Frankovich in Black Confetti – cancer chic.

Yvette Parsons in Silent Night – that dodgy ticker kept me on the edge of my seat.

The APRA Award for Best Singing in a Play...

Colleen was pretty amazing in Little Shop of Horrors

Didn't Don McGlashan sing in Shipsongs? He's a good singer too.

The Playmarket NEW ZEALAND Award for Best Line in a Kiwi Play...

Manawa – “Fuck you New Zealand!” – BAM. That's how you finish a play.

The AUCKLAND THEATRE COMPANY Award for Best Special Effect of the Year…

The endless mimed doors in Constantinople and/or the turntables in Constantinople -  Sound effects combined with mime effects and acting.

The projections in Black Confetti – nice.

The vibrator in The Vibrator Play. It seemed so real.

The KATHRYN RAWLINGS AND ASSOCIATES Award for Best Nudity of the Year.....

Adam Gardiner and Anna Julienne in The Vibrator Play

The cast of The Brave. Although not physically naked their hearts and souls were definitely exposed.

The JOHNSON AND LAIRD MANAGEMENT Award for Best Cross Gender Acting of the Year...

Bok Choi in Sinarella. Was Bok a woman or camp guy? It was hard to say but who cares because Bok was awesome

The SILO THEATRE Award for Best Ensemble acting of the Year...

The Waste Land – the cast with a combined age of 1500 years had some moves.

Call Cutta in a Box – the Auckland cast and the Indian operators. Although we were all mere puppets in the hands of skilled form forward new deconstructionalist German theatre makers, I thought we did pretty good.

The ROBERT BRUCE AGENCY Award for Best Director of a Gay Play staring Kip Chapman, Simon London, Dena Kennedy and Sam Snedden of the Year…

Sophie Roberrrrts

The ELIZABETH WHITING  Award for Best Costume of the Year...

John Parker - for David Aston's costume in Shortcut to Happiness. So outrageous that no one but  the Aston could pull it off.

The THEATREVIEW Award for Best Review Quote of the Year….

Hmm the computer wouldn't allow me to cut and paste a full Lexie quote. It was good though. A tad long but very good.

The HACKMAN Award for Best Unlucky in Love Character of the Year...

I thought Simon London was very unlucky in love in The Pride and did it very well. He was a bit rough though but when repressed emotions take control…

The JAMES WALLACE ARTS TRUST AWARD for the fastest pack in/pack out by a production team of the year...

Ruby Reihana-Wilson and Rob McDonald packing Standstill in and out of Q. Like lighting.

The NEW ZEALAND DANCE COMPANY Award for Best Dancing in a Theatre Show of the Year...

Constantinople. Not only did the play feature dancing there was dancing after the show as well!

The AUCKLAND ARTS FESTIVAL Award for Most Original Production of the Year...

It's a dead heat between:

Constantinople

Manawa

Black Confetti

Fastest pack-in/pack-out.

Best line: Chris Neels "you couldn't fumble-fuck your way out of a barrell of cunts"

Best technical ***k-up: the night I went someone accidentally locked the door into the garage and one of the cast jumped out a window to run around and open it.

At the HACKMANS – held at the Civic's Wintergarden, Auckland, Monday 10 December - my abortive attempt to meet the producers' brief by delivering an instant review of the night's proceedings (before the end, as it turned out) was cut short. Fair enough. But having agreed to be acerbic and taken the ‘no turn unstoned' approach, I intended to end as follows:

“Let me close by quoting Dame Diana Rigg, who compiled the book No Turn Unstoned: ‘There are so many wonderful qualities to be found in the theatre, and courage predominates every time an entrance is made, every time an actor or actress undertakes the daring and delicate task of making an audience believe. Another great quality is generosity of spirit.'

“I agree (and the same goes for theatre critics, by the way).

“I thank you all for your courage, generosity and spirit.”

Call me old fashioned but I did want to finish on that upbeat.
