What have you seen in the Fringe?

My own score is pretty pathetic so far this year – due to high work commitments and general exhaustion, I’ve missed a lot of other stuff I would have like to have seen. I’ve got to:
Lovers of Central Park
The Story of No-Home Neville and Unwholesome Clare
The Return of the Lonesome Buckwhips
Hotel
Imagining Reality
Still definitely want to get along to ‘The Orderly’ and ‘Deliver Us’ at BATS Theatre… anything else people reckon is a must-see?

Hi Joshua,
I’m the director of The Orderly. I’m quite thrilled that someone is looking forward to see our show! Very exciting. Hope we can deliver the goods.
Have you seen the trailer for The Orderly? If not, you can watch it on You Tube:
We’re heading down to Wellington on Wednesday but I might see you at the BAT cave. I’ll be the sweaty guy with big manic panic eyes.

I’ve had a sparse Fringe as well – but I have managed to see Scratch n Fly, Arch Enemies, Mothtick, Imagining Reality, and Brain Power. Brain Power is still on, and it’s a mighty fine ride, so I suggest you come see that – it’s on tonight (Saturday) and Sunday. If you can’t manage these nights, it has a return season at Bats, 13-16 March.

It’s certainly hard work keeping up with everything I want to see, especially when I spend large chunks of my time working out of Wellington – makes the weekends a bit crowded. I’ve seen 12 Fringe shows so far, down on the usual count (it’s as if my employers don’t realise there’s a Fringe on) and I’m now about to depart on holiday for a week. (It’s a major birthday milestone, so has to be celebrated/commiserated even at the cost of some Fringe.)
The Orderly is also on my list. The one I’m really looking forward to is Deliver Us. I have even changed our return flights to a day earlier just to get back in time to see it…. can’t miss the latest David Lawrence/Paul Rothwell production and have you see the picture of Erin Banks on the promo posters?

Anders, that video trailer is brilliant – which makes two I’ve now seen for Fringe Shows, along with the Site-Specific one for ‘Hotel’.
What made you decide to advertise your show in that fashion? Even if I wasn’t planning on seeing it already, that preview would definitely make me want too… my kind of humour, I guess. Oh, and the radio version of this ad is also fantastic – I am SO SICK of hearing actors reading dialogue from the show followed by the booking details, this made a great change.
I thought the Hotel trailer really captured the feel of the show well – and I find it interesting that it is not limited by the show’s events – was it created before the devising process was over? Like a few of those who have left comments, I would love to see more of the characters the group have created… maybe some online short films in the future?
Have any of the other Fringe Co-ops done video trailers? What do people reckon about the fusion of web-based video and onstage entertainment?
Oh – and Michael, I have indeed seen the deathly-looking Erin Banks on the ‘Deliver Us’ posters – I stopped by their rehearsal space today to say hello, and it turns out this time Mr. Rothwell even has the cast feeling disturbed!

HOTEL is nearly sold out with one week to go. All good. My concept for the characters does indeed go beyond what audiences see in the current show (HOTEL). If I can get funding I’d like to follow these people more; their pasts and futures; which may incorporate scenes that have been explored in the current site-specific.co.nz show.
Video trailers are pretty easy to make and post, I encourage more Fringe contributors to use this free advertising. Need any assistance, contact me and I’d be glad to help.

Hi Joshua,
The reason we decided to make a trailer was actually just because I love trailers! I always get a bit shitty if I’m late to a film and miss the trailers. They can be incredibly dynamic an exciting to watch. Sometimes better than the actual film. Anyway, the reason for the trailer for The Orderly was that we really wanted to be able to give people a visual taste of the play before they booked. You rarely get that opportunity with theatre. Often a good trailer is the deciding factor in whether I go to a movie or not. There is so much on in the Fringe and you can’t see/afford to see it all. Maybe the trailer will be the thing that make people choose to see The Orderly instead of one of the other Fringe shows.

I too am extremely lacking in fringe show numbers and have seen a piddly 5. Got to love working for a living!
Next years goal: See everything, even if it means seeing more than one show a night, every night of the fringe.
And next year EAT Wellington will hopefully have a Fringe fund to make even better shows!
Deliver Us is next on the list. I’ve seen Erin first thing in the morning and thats nothing compared to how scary she looks on the poster. Good times!! 🙂
