Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School is New Zealand’s foremost training establishment for the dramatic arts with well established courses in acting, directing and entertainment technology.
We are looking for a new Head of Department to take up the role following the retirement of the current incumbent in mid-2008. This Department has grown considerably over the last twelve years and Toi Whakaari is now considered the best training ground in New Zealand for Performing Arts practitioners.
The Head of Entertainment Technology, Performing Arts Management and Costume Construction is responsible for the following courses:
• Bachelor of Performing Arts (Management)
• Diploma in Entertainment Technology
• Advanced Diploma in Entertainment Technology
• Diploma in Costume Construction

Position Description
1. Position Title
Head of Entertainment Technology, Performing Arts Management and Costume Construction
2. Organisational Relationship
Responsible to the Director of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School
3 Direct Reports:
Senior Tutor: Stage and Events and Production Management, the Production Coordinator, Senior Tutor
Costume Construction and Technical and Resource Technician.
4 Summary of Position
• Leads the Entertainment Technology and Performing Arts Management, and Costume
Construction programmes to ensure effective delivery of curriculum and assessment
procedures as required by the degree documentation and NZQA.
• Administers and develops the Entertainment Technology and Performing Arts Management
programmes.
5 Principal Duties and Responsibilities
General
• Manage the Bachelor of Performing Arts (Management) degree and the Diploma in
Entertainment Technology programmes, in collaboration with the Senior Tutor: Stage & Events
& Production Management, and the Production Coordinator
• Engage in strategy and planning as a senior member of the management team
• Oversee the delivery and management of the Diploma in Costume Construction in
collaboration with the Senior Tutor (Costume Construction)
• Manage the School’s technical production resources.
• Manage full-time Departmental staff and contract teaching staff for the Entertainment
Technology and Performing Arts Management programmes
• Prepare and monitor Departmental operational and capital budgets
• Plan and schedule student learning programmes in relation to their curriculum, production, and
internship commitments.
• Work with Heads of Departments to develop and establish a collaborative teaching culture in
the School.
• Ensure effective lines of communication are maintained in relation to academic, curriculum
and management matters.
Course development and delivery
• Deliver curriculum for the Bachelor of Performing Arts Management and Diploma in
Entertainment Technology programmes in collaboration with full-time tutors, contract
specialists, and the Production Coordinator
• Negotiate contracts with specialist management and technical production tutors.
• Provide support to contract specialists to ensure they develop effective teaching plans and
assessment procedures.
• Liaise with the Entertainment Technology Advisory Panel and other industry stakeholders in
matters relating to course development within the Department.
• Develop and maintain links with the Industry; other training institutions, and the wider
community to ensure the relevance and purpose of the Entertainment Technology/Performing
Arts Management/Costume Construction programmes are understood.
• Develop national and international links to facilitate student exchange
Teaching
• Teach subjects in area(s) of specialisation.
• Supervise student research projects where appropriate
• Manage tutorial support, and act as supervising tutor, for the Entertainment Technology and
Performing Arts Management programmes.
• Coordinate and manage the Entertainment Technology and Performing Arts Management
secondment programmes.
Inter-departmental responsibilities
• Collaborate with other departments on joint projects that involve Performing Arts management
and/or Entertainment Technology and/or Costume Construction students
• Contribute to interdepartmental discussion and planning for whole School development
• Contribute to the research culture of the School
• Participate as a member of the School’s Curriculum Committee.
Student recruitment
• Liaise with the Marketing Manager and Taha Mâori Coordinator to promote the Entertainment
Technology and Performing Arts Management and Costume Construction programmes
• Liaise with the Drama School Administrator to coordinate student recruitment matters.
Governance:
• Provide written reports as required to the School’s Board or Studies and Board of Trustees on
curriculum and management matters relating to the ET/BPAM/DCC programmes.
6. General Duties
Attend and participate in all staff meetings as required
Contribute to and engage with the bi-cultural questions of the School
Maintain a high standard of professional ethics and recognise this as a position of trust
Act as a positive role model
Participate in in-house and public functions as required
Be willing to commit to ‘out of hours’ work as required
Uphold the policies, ethos and aims of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School
This is a permanent full-time position.
It expected that the successful candidate will be appointed in early 2008 to take up the position
between May and July 2008
