THE SCENE  

Auckland-based writers are invited to apply to join a new networking initiative for both emerging and established playwrights to be run by Auckland Theatre Company’s Literary Unit – THE SCENE.

THE SCENE’s six members will be provided with free double tickets to the plays on the ATC’s 2009 playbill and will meet together with the Literary Manager to critique each play and its journey from page to stage. Senior theatre practitioners may be invited to join the discussions and opportunities will also be provided to attend Auckland Theatre Company subscriber events.

It is envisaged that this will be an annual initiative. A requirement of membership is attendance at all scheduled events.  

Applicants must provide proof that they have written at least one full length play or two one act plays, a substantial work of prose fiction or non-fiction, or had a short story published or contributed to a poetry collection, within the last two years.

Priority will be given to writers who have attended events focused on dramatic writing (eg the 2009 Playmarket Playwrights’ Forum; Pasifika Playwrights’ Forum), whose work has received some kind of development assistance such as a workshop or reading, or who belong to an established playwrights’ group. One place will be set aside for writers experienced in other forms who wish to explore dramatic writing.

Membership of THE SCENE 2009 will be selected by interview from shortlisted applicants by the Literary Manager. No correspondence will be entered into.
