BLOOD WEDDING: FREE SHOW FOR THE MARRIED!
Dust off the wedding dress and the tux for what could well be the largest collection of wedding dresses in New Zealand when Blood Wedding, the theatre show that has Wellington abuzz, offers a free performance for newlyweds and anyone who turns up to the theatre in their wedding garb.
The special free performance of Blood Wedding will be held 6.30pm, Tuesday May 26 at Circa Theatre, Wellington. It will be run on a first-come, first-served basis, with free tickets on offer for anyone who turns up in their wedding dress or tuxedo, or who brings their Marriage Certificate dated from May 26 2008. The offer is open to traditional marriages and civil unions.
Blood Wedding, written by celebrated Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, describes the tragic circumstances that unfold when a Spanish village comes together to celebrate the marriage of a prominent son to a bride whose heart still burns for her first true love – who just happens to be married to her cousin!
Blood Wedding is no ordinary love story; it is a fiery challenge to our senses of duty, honour and desire. In the searing heat of the Spanish summer and set against the turbulent background of the era of the Spanish Civil War, a Bride prepares for her wedding. A wedding to unite a village destroyed by bitter infighting and man’s desire to settle arguments with the knife. The return of her first love Leonardo forces the Bride to choose between her duty and the will of her heart. Their decision to escape on her wedding day sends shockwaves through the community and precipitates an inevitable and bloody act of vengeance.
The critics have universally praised Circa’s production of Blood Wedding, directed by award-winning director Willem Wassenaar and starring a great cast that includes Geraldine Brophy (Second Hand Wedding, Dancing with the Stars), Rachel Forman (Apollo 13) and Dean O’Gorman (McLeod’s Daughters, Young Hercules).
"An outstanding production of Ted Hughes’ translation of Blood Wedding [….] any production that has performances as good as those by Geraldine Brophy, Carmel McGlone and Rachel Forman as the bride is pure gold." – Laurie Atkinson, Dominion Post.
"It’s intense but often laugh-out-loud funny." – Lynn Freeman, Capital Times.
"Blood Wedding brings a welcome blast of fresh energy to Circa." John Smythe, Theatreview
Also: There will be a q’n’a session after the performance TUESDAY MAY 19 6.30PM with the cast and crew of Blood Wedding, including composer Gareth Farr and designer Andrew Foster
