The 10th New Zealand Young Playwrights Competition, an event that has established itself as an important stepping-stone in the development of new writers for our theatre, presents works directed and presented by Auckland’s finest. Organised by Playwright agency Playmarket.

The winning young playwrights in this year’s competition are Kate Morris, Martha Hardy-Ward and Harry Meech. Be part of this exciting display of new talent.

1pm Silent Night by Martha Hardy-Ward, directed by Arthur Meek
The reenactment of Jesus’ birth kicks up a storm. The story of a devout Christian Mother and her rebellious son as they clash amid Christmas tensions, and how they must come to understanding each other.

3pm Plains by Harry Meech, directed by Thomas Sainsbury
Five short plays in one. Games of verbal cat and mouse are played in a surreal and dilapidated world, where the meaning is up to you.

5pm Drinks (open to public)

6pm Sketch by Kate Morris, directed by Sue Curnow
Recently workshopped at World Interplay 2009 in Cairns, Queensland and runner up in the Playmarket New New Zealand Play Award. Helped by a spirited artist, a terminally ill woman puts her last days on display in an art gallery.
