DUNEDIN’S FORTUNE TO HAVE ROGER HALL
Roger Hall, New Zealand’s leading playwright, is coming to Dunedin for two days in mid-July to make a series of presentations arranged through the Fortune Theatre.
Hall has a phenomenal list of achievements. He has written over 40 plays staged throughout NZ and overseas, and has written a string of box office smashes. His 2009 play FOUR FLAT WHITES IN ITALY broke box office records across the county – records previously set by Hall himself. The Fortune Theatre will be staging his newest work, A SHORT CUT TO HAPPINESS, in November.
On Saturday 16 July Roger Hall will be taking a Master Class for aspiring playwrights. In it Hall will discuss how (and why) to write a play, working on dialogue and character and give feedback to participants. On Sunday, 17 July he will give a two-hour public talk – “Fifteen Years to be an Overnight Success” – at The Apartment, Dowling Street, during which Hall will discuss the beginnings of his career.
Lara Macgregor, Artistic Director of the Fortune Theatre, is delighted to bring Roger Hall back to Dunedin. “Roger has a strong connection with the city – he came here in 1977 through the Robert Burns Fellowship, served on the Fortune’s board and made a tremendous contribution to the arts and Otago in general until he left in 1995. The Fortune is very proud to be able to bring Roger back to share his knowledge on to the next generation of upcoming playwrights as well as some anecdotes from his early years.“
