Downstage is open for submissions for its 2013 programme.

What are we looking for?

At Downstage we want to connect great ideas with audiences. We’re interested in is the thinking behind your project and what you’re trying to achieve. Let’s see if we can make it happen.

Downstage is a professional theatre in Wellington whose mandate is to present the best contemporary performance NZ has to offer.  Our audiences are discerning, diverse and intelligent.

We pride ourselves on contributing to the ecology of the performing arts sector by providing a platform for artists to grow artistically and sustainably.

We are interested in theatre that is adventurous.

We’re hungry for work born in NZ, physical theatre/circus, re-developments and return seasons of acclaimed work, excellent performance design, collaborations between creative disciplines and technologies.

What we do:

    ·         Connect your work to an audience

    ·         Present your work in a professional venue

    ·         Cover marketing and production costs in the house

    ·         Pay performers and operators a weekly wage

    ·         Pay an upfront fee to the company

    ·         Cover writer’s/devising royalties

    ·         Broker creative partnerships between artists

    ·         Give access to our in house expertise in dramaturgy, producing, production, financing and audience development

    ·         Introduce your work to other festivals and venues

What we don’t do:

    ·         Produce the work for you

    ·         Finance the development and rehearsals of the work

    ·         Programme artists or companies whose project is not funded or resourced, or who do not pay their team

    ·         Programme artists whose works have not been produced professionally, or who have no track record

    ·         Offer a box office split, or co-op arrangement

Submissions close 5pm, Friday 5 August 2011

Submissions are shortlisted by Hilary Beaton (Director/CEO) and Angela Green (Associate Producer Programming).  Selected applicants are then invited to pitch in person to Hilary, Angela and selected industry representatives on 21 August.
