Flood of artist grant applications
We are rapt to have received 32 grant applications and a further 17 venue applications by the 22 October deadline. Artists from Dunedin and throughout New Zealand have presented some fantastic ideas with applications totalling $70,000. We have only $22,500 worth of grants to give out so the funding panel will have to focus on the most innovative and experimental works most likely to appeal to Fringe audiences. At the end of the process we will have at least 15 funded works of high quality art to showcase as part of the Festival. Thanks Creative New Zealand for your support!

Venues still out there
We have had a record number of applications for the Fortune and Globe Theatre which will more than fill these two iconic venues. Some artists will need to be creative to find spaces to present their work. A good place to start is the Fringe Friendly Venue list available on the Festival website and applications for the Festival Club and Comedy Club are still open.

Comedy Club & Festival Club – Apply now
We are looking for 6-8 stand-up comedians, including emerging and established names, to join our Comedy Club programme as part of the 2012 Festival. We are also seeking expressions of interest from music and cabaret acts to perform in our popular Festival Club. Interested artists should see the information in the Artists Information Pack and then contact the Festival office or fill in an application before the 18 November deadline.

Only two weeks to register!
Artists have only two weeks to register for the 2012 Dunedin Fringe Festival. Early registrations are already being made via the online registration form which is very encouraging. We expect at least 40 events to register which will make one action packed Festival! Intending artists need to get all their event details, description and image sorted before trying to register. If you’re having trouble finalising aspects of your event get in touch with Festival staff so we can help.

Call for Fringe Inventions
Now’s your chance to make that thing you thought would change the world, or maybe just make life more interesting. Fringe Inventions is back and will culminate in an exhibition of Chindogu as part of the 2012 Dunedin Fringe. For the uninitiated, Chindogu are inventions that are almost useless – they woork but they are not useful. Often hilarious the inventions thumb their nose at functionality and our endless pursuit of progress. The event incorporates a mix of contemporary art, product design and good old number 8 wire thinking. We are now calling for artists, designers and inventors to submit their designs. The actual objects don’t need to exist yet just get us your ideas by 16 December 2011. See here for more details on the entry criteria.

Last Pecha Kucha Night for the year
If you haven’t been to one of our Pecha Kucha events now is the hour! The last event for 2011 is to be held on Thursday 17 November at the St Martins Hall in North East Valley, Dunedin. There will be a bumper crop of 14 presentations by a diverse range of artists, designers and generally interesting people. As the event is being held in the Valley we are drawing on some of the many talented people that live there including actor and producer Clare Adams, artist Jane Venis, travel writer Sarah Bond, historian and photographer Gary Blackman. Other presenters include sculptor Stuart Griffiths and director of Gus Fisher Gallery, Lynda Tyler. See event details for pricing and start time.

Circulation Festival on its way
Circulation is an arts, music and performance based festival hidden in lush native bush just 20 minutes drive inland of Dunedin. Running this year for five days with a massive line-up of over 100 national and international bands, dj’s, instructors and performers, Circulation is packed full of Fringe performers of the past, present and future. The event, which runs from 11-15 November, includes live music, workshops, comedy shows, and outdoor parties. You don’t have to be a performer to attend; it’s open to all ages, including families. For more information on tickets and performances see www.circulation.co.nz

Berlin Burlesque in Dunedin – Win tickets!
If you saw the award winning show The Butler at last year’s Otago Festival of the Arts you will want to see the next instalment from Christchurch’s Loons Circus Theatre Company. The Loons have just finished touring Berlin Burlesque to sell out shows at the Nelson and Tauranga Arts Festival and it is a rare treat to have these talented artists in Dunedin. The show runs from 9-13 November at Sammys. Many of the artists have performed at the Dunedin Fringe Festival over the last 10 years and a number will also be at the Circulation Festival. If you’re up for ‘an internationally flavoured, multi-dimensional extravaganza’ then check out their website for show reviews and more information on tickets. We also have a double pass to the opening night to giveaway! Send us an email telling us who the Berlin Burlesque story is based on and we’ll put your name into the hat to win a fantastic night out this Wednesday!
