I only resumed my mid-week residence of Auckland part-way through the year. As a result, missed quite a few shows during the first half of the year so will only offer a handful of nominations:
The Auckland Theatre Company Award for Best Nudity of the Year… So much choice, with 2011 the year of getting your kit off! Sam Snedden in The Only Child. Others got to hide their wedding tackles in the bath; Sam was flapping in the breeze for a good 10-15 minutes. And he had to combine it with portraying a melancholic, pathetic drunk enduring heart-break in the face of serious faces. Not just bits out, but multi-tasking nudity. With style.
The SHORTLAND ST Award for Best Break up of the Year… The destruction of the Family Wilder.
The AUCKLAND ACTORS Award for Smallest Part of the Year… Smallest part. Er, Sam Snedden in The Only Child. It was very, very cold on that stage. (Sorry, Sam!)
The KAREN KAY MANAGEMENT Award for Best Hooped skirt wearing, racially naive 19th Century Character of the Year…… As an outside bet, has anyone considered Laurel Devenie 🙂
The SILO THEATRE Award for Best Ensemble acting of the Year… End of the Golden Weather. Fantastic to see so many of Toi’s recent grads on a professional stage in Auckland too.
The APRA Award for Best Singing in a Play… Raising of the Titanics. Not just a play, but a concert too.
The ELIZABETH WHITING Award for Best Costume of the Year… only saw the Wellington production, but as it played Auckland too, I can nominate Veronica Lake’s dress. A costume that is also the set – how can it lose!
The STAMP Award for Best Newcomer of the Year…. Tim Carlsen. Moko, Love You Bro, Golden Weather, Tartuffe. Wellington’s loss is Auckland’s gain.
Michael Wray posted 16 Nov 2011, 11:24 PM
The TAPAC Award for Best Cross Gender Acting of the Year… Josephine Stewart-Tewhiu as pensioner Percy in The Space Race.
The ORYZA FOUNDATION Award for Best Accent of the Year… I don’t know the actor’s name, but the guy playing Jimmy in The Pitmen Painters.

The STAMP Award for Best Newcomer of the Year….
Elliot Christensen-Yule in Red. – holding your own against a semi bald Michael Hurst with an accent is no mean feat.
The AUCKLAND FESTIVAL Award for Best Pash of the Year…
Sophie Henderson and Nathan Whitaker in Tartuffe. Their tongues moved like whisks in Nigella Lawson’s kitchen.
The Auckland Theatre Company Award for Best Nudity of the Year…
Sam Snedden – so much frontal… As Patrick Stewart says in Extras – ‘I saw everything’
The SHORTLAND ST Award for Best Break up of the Year…
Elizabeth Hawthorne and Robyn Malcolm in Mary Stuart. Although they were broken up before they met they were even more broken up after their meeting.
The KATHRYN RAWLINGS & ASSOCIATES Award for Best Entrance of the Year…
A tough one – I reckon these three will have to slug it out:
1. David Aston, with a friendly smile and soaked in blood in Yours Truly
2. Sophie Henderson in Tartuffe running straight for the pool in her insane wedding dress
3. The stilt satyr in Venus Is
The ELEPHANT PUBLICITY Award for Best Poster of the Year…
Tartuffe. Speedos are superior to social media when it comes to marketing.
The ORYZA FOUNDATION Award for Best Accent of the Year…
Andi Crown as dirty whore Harvey in Yours Truly – the line ‘just’ av’ to fuck till me cunny’s raw’ was delivered with casual cool cockney indifference.
The Play Press Award for an Actress/Actor playing a character with a disability/medical condition of the year…
Sophie Henderson in Yours Truly.
The condition: Female Hysteria.
The cure: Lobotomy.
Side effect: creepy doctors visiting you late at night for a wee cuddle (but that’s the price you pay for a calmer outlook on life.)
The PLAYMARKET Award for Best Line in a Kiwi Play… “
The sherbet fizz and the whole world is a giant tongue”- Yours Truly by Albert Belz
The KAREN KAY MANAGEMENT Award for Best Hooped skirt wearing, racially naive 19th Century Character of the Year……
So many to choose from in a year was packed with racially naïve 19th century characters. Laurel Devenie was pretty good though.
The Q THEATRE Award for Best Special Effect of the Year…
The flying cocks in Venus is…
VS.
Q Theatre confetti artillery.
The ELIZABETH WHITING Award for Best Costume of the Year…
The poodle outfit in Tartuffe with inbuilt feces trapdoor
The ROBERT BRUCE Award for Best Stage Manager of the Year…
Josh Hyman – when people in the gambling den of Macau wants you back again and again and again there can only be one reason – you are the man.
Also, if I had been more on the ball this year I would have suggested an additional category:
The Rebel Alliance Zen award for keeping your cool when shit hits the fan…
Bex Isemonger, the operator for Yours Truly. When she mid show fell off her chair due to a rostra malfunction and was left hanging with only the lighting desk power cable, wrapped around her leg, preventing her from a bone crunching fall, Bex chilled the frak out and zenned where others would have panicked. She knew that any rash movement could pull the lighting desk off the table, throwing it (and her) into a show stopping spin towards the concrete floor so she patiently waited for the stage manager to come by to give her a hand. Whilst waiting she also politely declined offers of help from nearby audience members. They should just watch the show. That’s Rebel Zen right there.
