FRESH NEW DIRECTION FOR BATS 

As Wellington’s iconic BATS Theatre puts the finishing touches on exciting plans for the future of the theatre, we are delighted to announce the appointment of a new Programme Manager – Cherie Jacobson.

Cherie has had a long involvement with BATS, first as an audience member and then coming through as a performer and producer of her own work. Her first show, Tea For Toot, saw her nominated as the Most Promising New Playwright at the annual Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards in 2010. She has grown into a key member of the wider BATS community, and can’t wait to join the team.

Outgoing Programme Manager Martyn Wood is leaving BATS in an incredibly strong position. The theatre celebrated its 21^st year on his watch, and has since been recognised as an Arts Leadership Organisation by Creative New Zealand, securing a four-year investment in their future. Alongside a revamped website and booking system, increased box office numbers and producing two hugely successful Christmas fundraising shows, Martyn has welcomed a large number of productions from outside of Wellington, confirming BATS reputation as the leading development venue for new New Zealand work.

Victoria Spackman, chair of the BATS Board says:

“Martyn has been a huge asset to the theatre in his time at BATS, and while we are sorry to see him go, we wish him all the best. We are thrilled to have Cherie join the team in the key role of Programme Manager, and have no doubt she will continue the excellent work Martyn has been doing, while putting her own stamp on the programme. Cherie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role and we look forward to her contribution to the next phase of BATS.”

Cherie begins her role at BATS at an exciting time in the theatres history. After being purchased by Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson in 2011, the Board and staff are working closely with our new landlords to develop the building and facilities, and to protect the long term future of BATS.

“We are delighted to be working closely with Fran, Peter and the team at Wingnut to realise the full potential of BATS’ home at 1 Kent Terrace. It is an exciting time at BATS. We want to thank the Wellington theatre community for their ongoing support and we look forward to announcing our plans soon.” 

Cherie will start at BATS in time to welcome the two STAB Commissions, BATS flagship season. Flatland opens on October 13^th, and Into the Uncanny Valley on November 3^rd.
