What is The Actors’ Program?

1. A unique opportunity for trainee actors in NZ: The Actors’ Program is a practical, industry-focused, one-year intensive unlike anything else on offer in NZ at present.

2. A course with a high standard of talent teaching and leading it: The course was created by industry professionals and taught by highly experienced actors, directors, writers and practitioners. The Artistic Board members are all highly experienced with industry ‘mana’ or high credibility, as are the two patrons (Sam Neill and Ian Mune).

3. The possibility to do auditions or work part-time while you train: We encourage our actors to continue to grow their careers in the industry. All professional work will be considered as long as a balance is struck between meeting course requirements and undertaking acting opportunities. The course runs 4 days a week, leaving you 3 days a week as well as holiday breaks through the year, to continue part-time jobs or acting work.

4. Great value for money: The cost of this course works out to be roughly $12 per hour + GST. You will not be burdened with a student loan as all costs are paid for up front.

5. Personal contact with board members: You are mentored by a board member during your whole training. All our Board members are leading industry professionals who are motivated to see you succeed.

6. No essays or theory: The course is highly practical and industry-focused; it’s jam-packed with on-the-job doing. You will graduate with an Actors’ Program Diploma of Achievement.

7. A door to the industry: You work in industry conditions at an industry-ready level. Classes may be held in professional venues like Q theatre, the Basement or at South Pacific Pictures (Shortland St set).

8. Leading directors and casting directors teach on the course: All our tutors are currently working in the industry. E.g. Colin McColl, Raymond Hawthorne, Peter Burger, Shane Bosher. They may go on to cast from this encounter.

9. All other trainee actors are serious about the craft: Your classmates are all professionally-focused. You are treated as a professional here and not a student. In return, you are expected to act as a professional from day one.

10. You are never too old for the course: The age range over the past two years is 20-47 years.

11. You will be seen by the industry’s leaders and leave with both experience and product: You will complete short films, public performance(s) and leave the course with material for a showreel at a professional level that will all help you break into a competitive industry.

12. Our trainee actors are not novices: Whether they have had stage or screen experience, most of our trainees have already done some professional work or training. Classes move forward quickly and intensely.

13. We are relevant, up-to-date and connected to the industry: Follow us on Twitter and Facebook. See our website for more information on how to apply for an audition.
