A GLOBE APPROACH TO PERFORMING SHAKESPEARE
– Dr Vanessa Byrnes
How do you perform Shakespeare in a ‘Globe’ way? Are there approaches that make the plays seem immediately relevant to how we are today? How do we interpret and act Shakespeare’s plays to create dynamic performances in this unique space?
This workshop will take the actor through essential exercises and approaches to performing in a Globe Theatre with connection, presence and textual muscularity firmly in mind. The emphasis will be on:
• truthfully inhabiting the unique features of the space;
• discovering opportunities for connected acting within this environment;
• revealing methods to discover the actor can meet and reveal the immediacy of Shakespeare’s text in this dynamic Globe environment.
The work centres on Shakespeare, but will be directly transferable to any acting medium.
Taught by Dr. Vanessa Byrnes – a longtime advocate of the power of Shakespeare in a contemporary world, and of Globe methods. Vanessa was the first Australasian to assistant-direct at Shakespeare’s Globe (London) in 2000. She has directed many classic and modern productions and frequently works as an actor trainer, director, and producer. She is directing Antony & Cleopatra for the second time, with this production going into the Pop-up Globe for a season in late March.
Pop-up Globe Auckland is a full-scale working temporary replica of the second Globe Theatre originally built by Shakespeare and his company in 1614, the result of ground-breaking international academic research. With a steel frame ‘skinned’ in plywood the Pop-up Globe fuses cutting-edge scaffold technology with 400-year-old designs and superb contemporary performances to create an immersive 360 degree experience unlike any other.
Capacity is limited and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so book your tickets now.
Please wear appropriate, comfortable clothing for the workshops.
