TEENAGER GIVES LESSONS ON THE SIXTIES AT THIS YEAR’S COMEDY FESTIVAL
Join Rose Matafeo on a nostalgic trip back to the swingin’ sixties – but not as you know it! In her fourth comedy festival outing, Rose embarks on her first solo show. Incorporating her love for stand-up, sketch and her ‘Songs of Burt Bacharach’ compact disc, Rose will take a tour of the decade that would’ve changed her life (had she not been born in the ’90s)!
Rose began her comedy career as part of the Class Comedians programme in the 2007 NZ International Comedy Festival and shortly became the youngest pro comedian in the country. She has appeared on both TVOne’s Close Up and TV3’s Campbell Live, won Best Actress for the Auckland 48 Hour Film Competition, and is hailed by critics as having “a lot more star quality than some of the hacks twice her age” (Theatreview.org.nz).
Rose is also the taller member of the comedy duo ‘Heidi and Rose’, allowing her to stock high shelves and enjoy the success of their debut show in last year’s festival, A Guide to the Uncool, which was hailed by critics as “literally everything you could ask for” (Coup de Main magazine) and “my happiest hour spent this week” (Lumière Reader). With Heidi O’Loughlin, runner-up of the ‘Tallest Member of ‘Heidi and Rose’ Award’ directing the show, the pair hope to continue to cement themselves into the unpaved territory that is the future of NZ comedy.

Keeps her audience intrigued and captivated

Following last year’s Guide to the Uncool, Rose Matafeo is going it alone. Not because of any discord with her comedic partner and sounding board, Heidi O’Laughlin, but just because she can.
The production budget is obviously huge – Powerpoint and Photoshop both play a major part in the evening’s presentation – but the star is definitely Ms Matafeo.
There’s a sense of anticipation as the “twice-winner of the Video Ezy colouring competition who was recently seen on ‘Piha Rescue’ playing Embarrassed Friend Number 2” takes to the stage after an opening musical interlude. And you won’t be disappointed.
After an “I’m no expert” disclaimer, Rose takes you on a vaguely chronological tour of the high points of 1960s pop culture and relates them to her own experience of the world. There’s This Is Your Life, the sitcom, the beach party film series (for the record, nicely timed to coincide with the FDA’s approval of The Pill) and the classic variety show.
Then it’s time to examine the music messages of the day (oh, Mr Bacharach, what were you thinking?) before the show’s highlight – Rose’s own composition on the mandolin.
The show is relaxed and in Matafeo’s complete control. She is a master of timing and commands the stage in a way that keeps her audience intrigued and captivated. It seems as though having us there is as much fun for her as the show is for us.
I can’t wait to see what she does next.
