Grab your sisters, your cousins and BFF for a great girl’s night out during the Auckland Fringe 2013, as Sisterly Love performs at Q Theatre’s Vault from February 20th!
Borrowed shoes and not return them? Returned your favourite dress with stains? Talked you into that haircut? Would you hide your grandmother’s wedding dress from your sister – so she couldn’t wear it on her wedding day?
Meet Charlene, Karen, Jacqueline, Bernie and their mother. On her wedding day, Charlene refuses to get married until one of her sisters coughs up the good luck wedding dress.
Sisterly Love stars the latest up and coming raw talent in Auckland. The early show (6:30 pm) stars Kat Glass fresh from the independent Irish film The Dying Eye, The Basement in Bucket Boy and Love is a Street Fight, Short + Sweet Festival, Tempo Festival, Auckland Fringe and Read Raw.
The late show (8:00pm) stars Ashton Brown recently seen in Meat at Q theatre, at the Basement in Bucket Boy and Love is a Street Fight; Short + Sweet Festival, performed on tour with the theatre company Driving Drama and appeared on Shortland Street.
M.E. Macdonald’s plays have been produced in Australia and New Zealand including The Getaway, Disconnected, Four Stages of Passion, Motel Nights and Sociopaths don’t use commas. She is a member of the Auckland Playwrights Collective and Read Raw.

Could be a simmering firecracker

Sisterly Love is a one-person show played alternately by Kat Glass and Ashton Brown. Yes, Ashton Brown is a male, and it would be a completely different experience watching him play the five female characters we meet in this hour-long comedy. The opening show was performed by the perky Kat Glass, who inhabited all five characters with aplomb.
The play is set on the day of Charlene’s wedding. She, each of her three sisters and their mother all have an opinion on the day and whether or not Charlene deserves to wear the family’s lucky white wedding dress.
There is a lot of potential for mystery in this play but many pay-offs are revealed without set-ups. What could have been an intriguing exploration into family secrets is instead a cursory glance at sibling rivalry. At times the dialogue could have been trimmed down to avoid repetition. One less sister (and ex husband) could also have removed some confusion around who was who. However there’s no doubt M E Macdonald is a smart and witty writer and with another draft this play could be a real ripper.
Although the sound system is a little quiet and a table at the front of the stage distances the audience from the action, the production is nicely designed and the clean lines of the stage set off the colourful costumes.
With a few nips and tucks Sisterly Love could be a firecracker of a show simmering with Presbyterian denial, misguided lust and selfish intent.
