Don’t fake it…just cut it!
His parents left Niue in 1976 and never returned home. Now, 38 years later, their son Filimona returns to his parent’s homeland for a hilarious journey of discovery – reconnect with the land, his family and make peace with his ancestors.
My name is… Pilitome is written and directed by Vela Manusaute and in true Kila Kokonut Krew style, promises to be hilarious, irreverent and 100% Pacific. For five nights only at The Martin Hautus Institute Performing Arts Centre, MNIP is an original comedy / drama that will offer new comers a glimpse into the unique Niuean culture, and remind those who have left what it feels like to be home again.
KILA KOKONUT KREW
Kila Kokonut Krew was created in 2002 to fill a void in the Pacific Island Performing Arts Industry. Vela Manusaute and Anapela Polataivao, both Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School graduates, believed there was no other theatre company that focused on committing solely to the recognition, development and celebration of Pacific voices. The desire for such a company was the impetus to create Kila Kokonut Krew, in addition to the belief that Pacific Theatre was not embraced to the extent of its European counterparts. Based in South Auckland, the Kila Kokonut Krew’s objective was clear – to create art with a strong political and social focus that the rest of the world could not ignore.
Manusaute and Polataivao are joined by Stacey Leilua, Aleni Tufuga and Glen Jackson; the five are collectively the creative nucleus of New Zealand’s principal Pacific Island Theatre Company, Kila Kokonut Krew. With an eleven year history of sell out theatre, exceptional reviews and an ever-growing following of loyal supporters, the company is dedicated to the slogan that has been in place from day one – From the Pacific, We Rise. KKK has always been a vehicle for artists to push the boundaries of what they can artistically achieve, with the results of their work proving the absolute need for a company like this to exist and grow. Whilst their focus is Pacific, the relevance and significance of their work is universal.
