An impressive feat
Review by Chloe Klein 14th May 2015
Quick witted, confident, and a cohesive team, the Improv Bandits take over the Musgrove Studio with A Bard’s Tale: an improvised play in Shakespearean style.
Initially the small team seems dwarfed by the black space of the Musgrove, but they quickly prove themselves big enough and funny enough to stand out.
An audience member is named Queen and presented a golden crown to start the show. Her decree that the story should begin in Venice became the starting point for the following hour.
What follows is a well-paced, confidently performed spectacle. The Bandits are clearly well versed in their inspiration, making reference to several of Shakespeare’s famous plays and, in greater number, his clichés. There is never a moment were the actors are lost for words: an impressive feat in improvised performance.
Just as much a skilful improviser and comedian is the lighting technician, instantly designing the spots, washes and gobo lighting the acting calls for.
A Bard’s Tale can boast quality improvisation. Well worth a watch!
