Molly Mustard’s A Space Oddity and Beyond lives up to its name. A Bowie-inspired cabaret performance, the show is set within a television special, with host Molly Mustard welcoming a selection of glamorous dancers, burlesque, trapeze and pole performers. This television concept is strong on paper, however; its delivery is not always as tight. 

While the titular Molly Mustard is fun and fabulous, the dialogue seems unpracticed with jokes that are unclear and don’t always land. Molly’s high energy is an advantage but as an MC she needs to give her performers the floor once she’s handed over, as jokes and comments being made after her performers have begun their numbers are unnecessary and a distraction.

That said, the costuming and make-up are phenomenal and there are some stunning and fresh performances. Dream Brulee and Dr Love’s funky, multimedia-supported number is original and entrancing, while Jade Night and Pussimus Prime both show great skill and stage presence. The rocket ship-led finale number is a hilarious delight and demonstrates the value of a cohesive show, with a full tableau of the performers interacting together.

The group is undeniably talented and shows promise. Some serious editing of how to best utilise the theme and the show’s structure will improve and elevate it.
