Production Details

Join the intrepid crew of Space Patrol 5: The Next Generation on a voyage of exploration and discovery to the furthest reaches of the galaxy… and beyond! Originally created and performed by Christchurch’s Court Jesters, this NZIF ensemble cast will encounter alien civilisations and mysterious scientific phenomena, while dealing with the interpersonal tensions that naturally crop up between workmates who also live together. Space battles! Alien treachery! Poor decisions! Science! Engineering! SPACE PATROL 5!

(Please come early: we need help building the spaceship.)

“The amazing length of this narrative, constructed by the Court Jesters in a little under 45 minutes, is only rivalled by its detail…. Such care and love has been taken with this show, it is a delight to watch.” — Theatreview, NZIF 2014

Led by original cast members Matt Powell and Brendon Bennetts, Space Patrol 5: The Next Generation follows on from Space Patrol 5, performed at BATS Theatre (Out of Site) in 2014, where it was one of the first shows to sell out. It also enjoyed success at Court Theatre during the Court Jesters’ monthly seasons. The Court Jesters are a Christchurch based improv group that have been performing their signature show Scared Scriptless since 1990.

Articulate dismembering of the patriarchy

Review by George Fenn 24th Oct 2018

The return of the seminal NZ Star Trek Parody [first launched in 2014].

In the Foyer there is a hustle around a table of scrap material to be recycled by the audience into space ships. The audience votes to see which ship will become the flagship of the intrepid crew. Coming out on top is the S.S. Wang, which looks exactly like its name suggests.

We are asked for two issues, which are “no-one waters the pot plants” and “the patriarchy” which take us into a captain monologue fully loaded.

While the sci-fi reasoning is sometimes uncertain, the players stick to the themes presented creating a remarkable show which manages to tactfully and articulately dismember the patriarchy whilst in the middle of a high concept sci fi parody set aboard the S.S. Wang.

A discarded offer of the Kardashians is picked up, when the rulers of planet Aloe Vera planet who have enslaved the population make them subscribe. Despite this obvious target for lampooning, the cast works together to be inclusive of different ways to accept femininity. Also they rename the ship to the S.S. Pussy at the end and it is great.

“There is a special place is hell for women who tear down other women, but if you mess with me again I will send you there.”
