A fun ‘quickie’ for date deprived parents
Review by John Anderson 27th Apr 2019
Femme Natale 2 is a skit show playing at BATS Theatre in Wellington finding a way through parenting with humour. I am struck by the range of ages in the audience, and throughout the show there are hoots of laughter and groans of recognition.
Skit shows almost by their very nature will have the odd items that miss their mark in one way or the other but this show had more than I would have expected, particularly the ‘rap’ song ‘Home D’ about the ‘reverse’ sexism of stay at home Dads. This item is stylistically naive and weak.
For me though, the show is carried by a trifecta of winning skits that are worth the price of admission. ‘The Session’ performed by April Phillips and Tracy Savage is witty with honest bite. ‘Labia Who Sauna’ is neatly observed comedy in outrageously funny costumes. And there is the wonderfully awkward comic exchange between April Phillips and Jeremy Nelson in ‘Re-Kindling the Flame’: a skit during which we overheard murmurs of “too much truth” from an audience member nearby.
Special mention should also go to The Shanitary (Shirley Domb) and Swoonie-Moonie (Fingal Pollock) as two stagehands engaged in an age-old struggle of comedic one-upmanship. They really help the show flow.
The show finishes with the gentle triumph of ‘Out the Other Side’ with lyrics written by Fingal Pollock, performed by the whole cast. It is a fitting end to the night.
At just over an hour the whole show is a fun ‘quickie’ for date-deprived parents – there is even time for dessert.
