Confident and varied performance
Review by Deborah Pope 27th Feb 2021
Inspired by the work of Yayoi Kusama, LOCO is a confident and varied performance which runs until Sunday night at The Wellington Fringe Festival. It is worth a visit. The near capacity audience on opening night certainly enjoy the show.
The 10 talented cast members include 6 dancers, 3 circus artists and a violinist and together they present a range of skills, choreographic styles and ideas in a playful well structured work.
Opening with a meditative gestural piece within a large soft spot, LOCO develops the visual theme through a range of ensemble and solo pieces and experiences. Highlights of the evening include a quirky ensemble piece with pop art coloured rubber gloves, an electric, aggressive, acrobatic duet, a strong drum based dance and a weird circus contortion act. The LED hoop manipulation further connected to the aesthetic.
There was a dynamic quality and range in the material which gave it an unexpectedness and the circus and solo violin add to this. The commitment and skill of the dancers, the music, lights and staging also contribute to the polished performance.
The integration of the violinist and the circus work were really interesting concepts as was the overall aesthetic and need more development but it is exciting to see the growth and the potential for the future from this young director and company.
