NZ International Comedy Festival 2021

Production Details

An hour with Laura Davis leaves you feeling uplifted, somewhat bewildered and utterly amazed by such blistering talent.

A show for current times, If This Is It addresses the upheaving mix of doom and hope that we’re all living with. Laura delivers valiantly uplifting, intimate and heartfelt comedy that blurs the line between artist and audience.

Like a walk through the woods

Review by Melissa Bee 19th May 2021

Laura Davis spent a year in the “woods of Wellington”, and the result is If This is It, a meandering walk down the paths of her psyche over the past year. Davis warms the audience to her with tales of her life in Western Australia and her time in England before she delves into the darkly funny existential reflection she (and most of us) experienced over the past year.

Her stream-of-consciousness delivery at times hinders the performance. The audience reacts most strongly to jokes where she hits her punchline and allows the laughter to settle rather than moving on to another anecdote.

If This is It is at its best when Davis pairs the serious events of the day with the absurd. She loves her craft and it shows in her approach to the challenges society faces. She says “ignorance is bliss”, but the result of her awareness is an hour of sharp comedy.

Davis’ comedy is like a walk through the woods – its enjoyment reveals itself as you get further down the track, it’s sometimes hard to follow, other times dark and shadowy, and, by the end, you’re glad you experienced it.
