PLAYS, PLAYERS AND PLACES:
A SPOTLIGHT ON THE HISTORY OF NEW ZEALAND THEATRE

Presented by Victoria Continuing Education in partnership with the New Zealand Theatre Archive.

Theatre has entertained New Zealanders for over 160 years. It has a rich history and continues to play an important part in our evolving culture. This day-long seminar features presentations from a number of leading researchers and writers and examines different aspects of New Zealand theatre history.

The speakers and their individual presentations are:

Researching The Pollards
Peter Downes, author of Shadows on the Stage and other books about early theatre in New Zealand, discusses his 20-year search for this remarkable 19th century theatrical ‘family’.

It’s Only the World
Sarah Gaitanos talks about her recent publication Nola Millar: A Theatrical Life, the biography of one of the most significant figures in the history of New Zealand theatre.

Billy Hoskins and his contribution to New Zealand Theatre – 1871-1880
Adrienne Simpson, author and researcher of early opera in New Zealand, deals with Hoskins, probably the best actor to come to New Zealand in the 19th century, and his link to Henry Irving, one of the most famous English stage actors of the Victorian era.

93 Years Young
Bill Sheat was on the board of the State Opera House in Wellington for 20 years. He will discuss the history of the theatre, its owners, the plays, operas, ballets and other shows that were staged there and in its predecessors of the same name.

The day concludes with a panel discussion on the importance of New Zealand theatre history in the overall picture of theatre today. This discussion will be chaired by Laurie Atkinson, theatre critic for The Dominion Post.
