His Mother’s Son

Where can you get a drink in hospital?
His Mother’s Son examines the world of a binge-drinking Samoan and the impact his lifestyle has on his teenage son, Palagi wife and his relationship with his mother.
At a time when we are being empowered to tell our friends and family to “ease up on the drink” this play, equal parts funny and tragic, is particularly resonant.
Unasa says ‘For me, the play is about what happens when you ignore the warning signals. And it’s about how loved ones learn to cope in dysfunctional circumstances. There’s lots of room for laughs and some for tears as well.’
Unasa, a playwright of Samoan and Pakeha descent, has been writing for theatre since 2002 and ‘His Mother’s Son’ was her first play that went on to enjoy a professional production having its premiere season at BATS Theatre in Wellington in February 2007 and then coming up to the Maidment Theatre in June that same year.
Directed by Katrina Chandra with Elisabeth Easther, Iaheto Ah Hi (Tautai, Matariki), Victoria Schmidt (Sione’s Wedding, Bullrush), Shadon Meredith (Go Solo, His Mother’s Son), His Mother’s Son is a hotbed of confusion, drama, tears, and laughter! It is a comical and sometimes – serious look at how the mothers and sons of the Siaosi family cope with being just that – ‘family’.
