COMEDY FOR CHRISTCHURCH: FUNDRAISER SHOW AT THEATRE ROYAL NELSON
At 7:30pm Wednesday 9 March the Theatre Royal Nelson will host a special fundraiser performance COMEDY FOR CHRISTCHURCH, featuring performers from The Court Theatre’s improvisational comedy troupe The Court Jesters.
COMEDY FOR CHRISTCHURCH will be a night of improvisational comedy in the vein of iconic Canterbury show SCARED SCRIPTLESS, which has been staged at The Court Theatre for over twenty years. All tickets are $20, with all proceeds donated to the Salvation Army’s Earthquake Relief Fund.
Jeff Clark was working in The Court Theatre when the earthquake struck, and he and his co-workers evacuated the buildings uninjured. Realising the scale of the damage, Clark took his family to relatives in Nelson. “We have two small children, so that decision was relatively easy. Once I was here, however, I needed to find some way of helping my friends and family back in the city. So I started to organise a fundraiser show.”
Clark contacted former member of The Court Jesters Dan Allan, who moved to Nelson in 2010 to form independent theatre troupe Body In Space (and recently performed The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) as part of the Summertime Outdoor Theatre). Allan quickly joined the project and put Clark in contact with the Theatre Royal. From there things “got moving pretty quickly,” says Clark. The Theatre Royal will donate the theatre and all staff to support the fundraising. Everyman Records will waive all ticketing fees.
Several Court Jesters will be travelling to Nelson to perform in COMEDY FOR CHRISTCHURCH. “At a time like this everyone wants to whatever they can to help. If we can provide some comic relief and contribute to the fundraising efforts, then we’ll feel like we’re contributing something useful.”
