RED LEAP THEATRE SEEKS NEW GENERAL MANAGER 

Red Leap Theatre is a professional Auckland based movement and image based theatre company. Our current General Manager Lauren Hughes is stepping down from her management role to take up a governance role with the company. As a result a fantastic opportunity has arisen for one lucky person to become the new GM for the company.  

The role reports to the Trust Board and, along with Co-Artistic Directors Kate Parker and Julie Nolan, is responsible for managing the delivery of the company’s business plan and programme. The role is supported by our fabulous producer Theresa Hanaray.

Job Description

The General Manager is responsible, under the direction of the Board, for the management of Red Leap Theatre Charitable Trust. They work in partnership with the Artistic Co-directors who are responsible for the Artistic Leadership of the organisation. Together this management team are charged with delivering the business plan in accordance with the Board’s Strategic Plan and the Artistic Programme.

Based at: Corbans Estate Arts Centre, 426 Great North Rd, Henderson, Auckland

Period: Contract Feb to 31 Dec 2012

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • To develop and execute a business plan in accordance with the Strategic Plan
  • To manage the Trust’s finances, which are audited annually
  • To secure funding to deliver the Trust’s initiatives, and meet the reporting/accountability requirements of funding partners
  • To work with the Board to attract, and to service, donors and sponsors
  • To manage existing and develop new revenue generating programmes/initiatives
  • To manage the Trust’s relationships with stakeholders including but not limited to funders, sponsors, donors, contractors, suppliers, presenters, venues, schools, audience members
  • To advocate for the organisation and for physical theatre within the New Zealand and international performing arts sectors, and the wider public when required
  • To continue the implementation of the Trust’s Marketing and Communication Plan
  • To promote the company and its programmes to presenters and other potential partners
  • To develop the 2014 programme in partnership with the Co-Artistic Directors (in time for funding applications in May/June 2012)
  • To support the Producer and Co-Artistic Directors in the delivery of the 2013 programme
  • Lead the development and improvement of processes and systems to support the achievement of the Strategic Plan especially in the areas of business operations, financial management, HR, IT, marketing and fundraising

Skills and competencies sought:

  • A passion for the performing arts and appreciation of devised theatre
  • A commitment to Red Leap Theatre values
  • Knowledgeable about the New Zealand and/or International performance arts industry
  • Ability to manage self and manage others including skills in conflict management, negotiation, coaching and motivational leadership
  • Financial skills including developing and managing budgets, cash flow management and preferably some experience in use of financial software eg MYOB
  • Confident use of technology including Windows Office programmes, Social Media sites, Databases
  • Production and touring experience
  • Confident verbal and written communicator
  • A collaborative, flexible approach
  • Creative AND strategic thinker

About Red Leap Theatre 

Red Leap Theatre is New Zealand’s leading image and movement based theatre company under the artistic leadership of Kate Parker and Julie Nolan. The Trust’s primary objectives are to develop artists, audiences and the artform of devised physical theatre in New Zealand and internationally, through creative development, presentation, touring and education.

Red Leap Theatre has been operating as a limited company since 2008 but transitioned to a Charitable Trust in 2010 to better reflect the charitable nature of the organisation.

Red Leap Theatre’s core funding is currently provided through Creative New Zealand’s Toi Uru Kahikatea Programme and ASB Community Trust. Red Leap Theatre also generates a significant proportion of their income via box office revenues, performance and teaching fees.

In recent years the company has been presented by Auckland Arts Festival, NZ International Arts Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Sydney Festival, LG Arts Centre Seoul, Busan International Arts Festival. Their production The Arrival by Shaun Tan dominated the 2010 Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards and collected six awards including Best and Most Original Production. Their production Paper Sky won Most Original Production and Best Set Design in 2012.

In 2013 Red Leap are touring The Arrival to Macao and Taiwan, touring Paper Sky domestically, developing a major new work and delivering a Community Engagement Programme including projects such as INCUBATOR and The Schools Trash To Fashion.

The company is resident at Corbans Estate Arts Centre in Henderson where their office and rehearsal space is located. The Management Team consists of  Co-Artistic Directors Kate Parker and Julie Nolan and the General Manager Role, all supported by Producer Theresa Hanaray.
