DUNEDIN FRINGE 2013  

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL 

The 2013 Dunedin Fringe Festival will take place from 14-24 March and will present more than 60 events covering a range of art forms. A total of 35 acts are Dunedin based with the other 25 coming from around New Zealand and the world. More than 300 artists will be participating in the 2013 Dunedin Fringe creating a massive boost in artistic activity and vibrancy in the city.

The Festival is proud to announce a series of special events for the 2013 Dunedin Fringe Festival. Unlike our many artist produced events these special events are produced by the Festival in order to highlight feature artists, art forms or Festival milestones. They also aim to bring the Festival to the public in new and exciting ways. 2013 Special Events include:

FESTIVAL LAUNCH

13 March, The Octagon, 8pm, Free 

The public is invited to join the Festival for a special launch event to be held in the Octagon, the site of the Festival Hub. Be first to see an inspired container art installation the likes of which Dunedin has never seen. Be dazzled by aerial performers risking life and limb for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy our night market showcasing a unique range of art objects. This special pre-Festival opening event is suitable for all ages.

FRINGE PICKS

14-23 March, The Octagon, 12:00 noon, Free 

Fringe Picks is a showcase of Festival artists each lunch-time during the Festival. Get on down to the Festival Hub for a snapshot of the Festival and the chance to win free tickets to Festival shows!

CRISPIN HELLION GLOVER’S BIG SLIDESHOW AND FILMS

16 & 17 March, Red Lecture Theatre, 7:00 pm, $30/$25

Actor, director and writer Crispin Hellion Glover brings his unique live show to the Dunedin Fringe Festival for two nights. The evening begins with The Big Slide Show, a dramatic narration by Glover to projected imagery from his “profusely illustrated” books. This is followed by a special screening of his independent films It is Fine (16 March) and What is This? (17 March). These provocative, surreal and challenging films are followed by a Q & A with Glover and book signing opportunity.

Known primarily for his eccentric acting roles in films such as Back to the Future, Charlie’s Angels and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Crispin Glover Show provides an insight into Glover’s unconventional personal projects. This highly unique event has never been to New Zealand before. Both evenings are unique featuring a different slide show/performance and film.

ENTOMO

18-21 March, Temple Gallery, 8:00pm, $15/10 

Spain’s EA&AE present a contemporary urban dance that analyses the insect world. Through a magnifying glass we observe two small creatures and the microcosm that surrounds them. They may be humans, they may be insects. Performed more than 75 times in 12 countries, this show has received multiple awards and accolades.  

Entomo is a collaboration between EA&AE, the Dunedin Fringe Festival, the Spanish Embassy in New Zealand and Spanish Cultural Action (AC/E) who work to promote Spanish culture internationally.

NGĀTAHI – KNOW THE LINKS

21 March, Queens, 7pm, koha/gold coin donation

Ngātahi – Know The Links is a six part rapumentary series on street art and activism amongst native and marginalised people in twenty-two countries. Creator Dean Hapeta, aka Te Kupu, from seminal New Zealand hiphop group Upper Hutt Posse presents the latest and final part in a six part series. This unique underground documentary takes in Budapest, Belgrade, Beijing, Rio De Janeiro & São Paulo. Ngātahi – Know The Links gives viewers expressions, sights and sounds not usually experienced outside of progressive discourse and conscious hiphop. Te Kupu will be in attendance to answer questions about his work.
