BOOK ENDS

THE PLAY 

Every Tuesday morning, members of the all-male Cabin Fever Club meet for coffee at The Sour Dough Café. In their sixties, they are all literary types: one former editor, one free-lancer writer, an actor, a novelist, a playwright and a poet.

They are cantankerous, opinionated, envious, erudite, insecure, and quite often, amusing. What binds them together is their mutual love of books.

Each scene takes place a year apart. But over those four years, technology is changing their lives in a way that none of them could foresee back in 2010.

THE PLAYWRIGHT 

Roger Hall will soon celebrate forty years as a playwright, a career that started with the smash hit, Glide Time, and followed a year later with Middle-Age Spread.

Since then, he has averaged one play year (plus numerous TV and radio scripts and pantomimes). Now in his seventies, Roger’s last four plays have been produced extensively throughout the country. Auckland Theatre Company premiered Who Wants to be a 100? and Four Flat Whites in Italy, and presented A Short Cut to Happiness in the 2012 subscription programme. Most recently audiences throughout the country enjoyed Roger’s musical about grandparenting You Can Always Hand Them Back, co-written with Peter Skellern.

PS. Roger Hall is a member of a Cabin Fever Club, a group he started a dozen years ago. He is fully expecting to be banned from attending club meetings after the others have seen this production. 

Through ATC Literary, you’re invited to MAKING SCENES 2013, monthly play readings where a writer, actors and director, having worked on a draft script, stage a public reading.

Play Readings are FREE and take place in the studios at Auckland Theatre Company, 487 Dominion Road (carpark & entry off Brixton Road).
