Late Sunday evening, boppy music, relaxed atmos. The full house is buzzing with expectation and brightness. Then. IDIOM is a treat. Such a chocolate box of delights in the lead up to Christmas.

Laser Kiwi AKA Zane Jarvie, Imogen Stone, Degge Jarvie, and COLLOSAL Productions technical director: Dean Holdaway bring a slick, sick, stylish show to fulfil, as they so aptly put it, ‘their unique style of surreal sketch circus’. The triad at the helm of all this invention have curated the acts well and know how to pull it together.

The show starts with a whizz and a bang before Derek Flores AKA El Jaguar lurches in to chew up the crowd dressed like a maniacal escapee from a WWF event. 

‘My jokes are very niche. What’s your favourite bus?’ He’s funny, clever and quick to feel  and respond to the cues from the room, we are in the hands of a master improvisor.  Each of his appearances throughout the night build in intensity until the audience, completely on his side, will do whatever he asks – bloody great!!

Imogen Stone and Rosita Hendry, lithe and luscious on corde lisse are totally in control of their medium. Twisting and turning in the air, sometimes plunging towards gravity drawing gasps from the crowd and making it all look easy, but the level of skill is commendable. 

Jasmine Jessen is an impressive soprano in a gorgeous sparkling red frock, hitting the high notes with aplomb to put George Fowler aka Hugo Grrrl in his place.  He returns, drag king extraordinaire, with outfits to die for plus a mischievous twinkle in the eye.  He struts grinds and preens his feathers, with a little help from another couple of tweeters, and whips up a frenzy, traffic lights flashing outrageously. 

Lisa Komatsubura is set up as the kendama expert (look it up, hours of fun) her act expands in the second half with an impressive display of skill.

A kooky round of Pictionary, a bout of ghost drumming, lots of absurd antics – it’s all here in this show filled with quirks and joy.

Jackson Cordery does a killer tissue act in silver heels, wide legged, hyper flexi queen of the aerial in death dropping form.

Worth the price of admission alone is the breathtaking cyr wheel solo by Rosita Hendry to Leonard Cohen’s inimitable Halleluiah,  a much interpreted piece of music. It is utterly sublime, a zenith of poise and grace and unique choreography, gorgeously constructed around the rise and fall of the music.  Curving, tilting, rolling, flowing, highly expressive, immaculately presented – one of my artistic highlights for the year. Bravo to this angelic artist with her cyr halo.
Zane and Degge Jarvie bring it home with superb juggling. 

We are left wanting more from each artist which is a good sign.
