The Tempo Te Rerenga o Tere – Open Studio series provides a platform for artists to share new works and works in progress in a supportive environment, fostering a spirit of well-being. It offers them the opportunity to present their creative efforts to friends and whānau.

Youth and beauty, age and bones –
My joints made of Titanium.
One shoulder, two hips, one knee and one foot –
Need I more explanium?
And anyway, what argument is this
twixt it and me, for we are
Simultaneum.

This odd little poem is the true story of my body.
My dance begins with a long warm-up – so needed when 5 of your joints are made from titanium. The warm-up segues into the dance (perhaps they are one and the same).

All of it is an exploration of the gift that is now ~ Enjoy!

A solo show from a dancer 'of a certain age', triumphs over the body's limitations.

I will start this review with a poem by Jenny that was in the programme.

My joints made of Titanium.

There is one word to describe this performance. Extraordinary.

I will try to go on and describe why.

Jenny enters to music, wearing rehearsal clothes and immediately starts with stretches against the brick wall embedded with wooden barres. I am immediately impressed with her extension.

Is this part of the dance?

The movement is a combination of yoga and ballet which melds into extremely expressive body language. The rehearsal clothes come off and Jenny is in a skin-coloured leotard. Is this when the dance starts?

I didn’t care as I was mesmerized from the beginning.

With a body of sinew, veins, bones and Titanium, Jenny moves around the expansive studio with a mixture of classical and modern movement, very lyrical and flowing.

Great strength in her floor work gives a dramatic feel to the dance and while there are no jumps or sudden turns, her exceptional emotional commitment to what she was dancing, negated these. 

A solo dance show from a dancer of a certain age showing that while the body does limit you in someways, you can certainly extend and triumph within those limitations.
