SAM BROOKS WINS THE 2016 BRUCE MASON PLAYWRITING AWARD The Bruce Mason Playwriting Award was presented to Sam Brooks at the Playmarket Accolades held at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington on 13 November 2016. The $10,000 cash prize recognises early success in the career of the winning playwright and is designed to encourage their continued exploration of the theatre medium.

The Classic Comedy Club celebrates 20 years on Queen St with ‘A Year of It’ It was around October 1996 that a group of young, local comedians and producers started eyeing up the old adult cinema at 321 Queen St, launching a year-long journey towards opening the doors of New Zealand’s first ever dedicated live comedy club: The Classic. From humble beginnings in October 1997, The Classic has established itself as one of the most highly regarded comedy clubs in the world.

UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND'S MAIDMENT THEATRE TO CLOSE FOR GOOD NZ Herald, Wednesday Nov 2, 2016 The University of Auckland's Maidment Theatre is to close for good after costs for seismic strengthening soared to more than $16 million. The theatre, which is set in the university's central city grounds, was temporarily closed last December amid concerns over its earthquake safety standards. Today, university bosses announced to staff the theatre would not re-open because it would cost too much to bring it up to modern safety regulations.

POP-UP GLOBE IS BACK! Four new productions. A brand new location. Ground-breaking new theatre design. Pop-up Globe, the world’s first temporary working replica of Shakespeare’s theatre, the second Globe, popped up for the first time in Auckland in February 2016 with a twice-extended debut season that sold over 100,000 tickets including 20,000 to school students.

FLITS ACROSS THE STAGE: theatrical ephemera from the Heritage Collections This exhibition at the Reed Gallery, Dunedin Public Library, is now in its final week, and finishes on Sunday 9 October 2016. Included in the McNab New Zealand Collection at Dunedin Public Libraries is a little-known collection of ephemera.* The bulk of the McNab Ephemera Collection consists of twentieth century theatre programmes, although some date back to the late nineteenth century and feature theatres which have long since disappeared from the Dunedin streetscape.

Isaac Theatre Royal Wins Supreme Award at Champion Canterbury Business Awards 2016 The Isaac Theatre Royal took top honours at the largest business awards in New Zealand for their significant efforts following the 2011 earthquakes. The iconic Christchurch theatre also took out the award for Retail/Hospitality Small Enterprise for ‘dynamic professionals providing a phenomenal customer experience’, before being recognised at the end of the night with The Press Champion Canterbury Supreme Small Enterprise Award.

ELIZABETH MCRAE HONOURED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Equity New Zealand is thrilled to announce that Elizabeth McRae is the recipient of the 2016 Equity Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Ryman Healthcare. Elizabeth McRae started her acting career in the 70s with a string of TV and film credits including Terry and the Gunrunners, Go Girls, A Death in the Family and Rest for the Wicked. AUDITIONS FOR POP-UP GLOBE’S 2017 SEASON ARE NOW OPEN Pop-up Globe® is the world’s first full scale temporary working replica of the second Globe, Shakespeare’s theatre. Pop-up Globe produces spectacular Jacobean theatre, particularly the works of Shakespeare, in "pop-up" replicas of the second Globe – the theatre his company built and used. We are looking for actors to form two spectacular acting companies who will work with world experts in Shakespearean theatre to perform four ensemble professional productions of Shakespeare’s plays.
