NEW ZEALAND’S VIRTUAL COVID-19 LOCKDOWN FESTIVAL [written for The Theatre Times] Professional theatres worked with swiftly responding funding bodies to secure continuity or emergency relief grants and some proceeded to invent new ways to deliver shows to their audiences. And ever-creative independent co-ops variously rose to the challenge. Most notable were Centrepoint Theatre’s 24-Hour Challenge, the Auckland Theatre Company’s online adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull and Circa Theatre’s It’s Behind You! (see below). But first, here’s an overview of what else happened over the 10 weeks of Lockdown Levels 4, 3 and 2.

$13M BOOST FROM CREATIVE NEW ZEALAND FOR EMERGENCY ARTS FUNDING Creative New Zealand has dug deep to respond to the extraordinary volume of applications for its COVID-19 Emergency Response Package, investing an additional $13 million in its now closed first phase of arts funding. Arts Council leadership on Friday (5 June) approved the organisation drawing on further reserves to increase its total Phase 1 investment from $16 million to $29 million.

DEAN PARKER OBITUARY The death yesterday (14 April 2020) of Dean Parker, one of New Zealand’s most successful screenwriters and playwrights, was announced by Murray Lynch, Director of Playmarket, the playwright’s agent. Dean Parker was born in Napier in 1947 of mainly Irish ancestry. Educated at Napier Marist and Hastings St John’s, he worked as a writer for much of his life and was prominent in his union, the New Zealand Writer’s Guild. Dean wrote extensively for stage, radio, television and film.

CREATIVE NEW ZEALAND OPENS FIRST PHASE FUNDING FOR COVID-19-IMPACTED ARTS SECTOR Today, Tuesday 14 April, Creative New Zealand has opened its first phase Emergency Response Package, a $16 million investment to be distributed to the arts sector through to 30 June 2020 (the end of Creative New Zealand’s financial year). A second phase, which will provide support beyond June 2020, will be initially explored at the April Arts Council meeting.

SGCNZ’s 2020 Regional University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festivals WHERE THERE’S WILL THERE’S A WAY Respecting the many hours of work the students, teachers and other directors have spent rehearsing their scenes for SGCNZ’s 2020 Regional University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festivals, and to address the restrictions caused by COVID-19, a creative way has been devised through the schools supplying their scenes on film this year. More students will be able to be involved, as those in Media Studies will also have roles to play. Schools and HomeSchool Clusters are sending their films to Glass Gecko Films, which is working closely with SGCNZ to facilitate the methodology. Some have been sent already. The rest will have a month from whenever the lock-down ends and schools return.

Even in the face of unprecedented world events, the Fringe continued to thrive whilst taking measures to ensure artists and audiences were safe. This year’s awards applauded outstanding work in production, design, and performance, all of which surprised and delighted us in the 2020 Fringe season. Never an easy task for the judges, this year was of course no different with an abundance of incredible new works to experience.

HEARTBREAK LEADS TO TOP AWARD FOR PLAYWRIGHT PLAYMARKET is pleased to announce the ADAM NZ PLAY AWARD winner for 2020 is Jess Sayer for her play This Particular Room. The Adam NZ Play Award recognises and celebrates the best in new unproduced writing for the theatre. Jess also won the award for Best Play by a Woman Playwright. She has previously been shortlisted for the Adam NZ Play Award twice for her plays Beautiful Coincidences and Speak.
