AUCKLAND THEATRE COMPANY APPOINTS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Auckland Theatre Company (ATC) today announced the appointment of Jonathan Bielski as Chief Executive Officer. Currently Artistic Director of Auckland Arts Festival, Bielski will finish programming the 2020 festival then join ATC’s Artistic Director Colin McColl at the helm of Auckland’s premiere theatre company in July this year.

SEARING FAMILY DRAMA WINS TOP AWARD PLAYMARKET is pleased to announce the ADAM NZ PLAY AWARD winner for 2019: Mitch Tawhi Thomas (Ngāti Maniapoto) for his play Pakaru. Tawhi Thomas also won the award for Best Play by a Māori Playwright. He is the first playwright to win the Adam NZ Play Award twice, having already taken the top prize in 2012 for his play Hui.

TOI WHAKAARI INTERIM DIRECTOR ANNOUNCED The Toi Whakaari Board has just announced that acclaimed actor and arts manager Tanea Heke (Ngā Puhi) will be Interim Director of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School for the first months of 2019, following Christian Penny’s resignation last month. Tanea has a rare and critical set of skills, experience and networks. She brings a strategic view, a highly developed set of operational skills and industry networks, and, at the heart of these, a commitment to upholding kaupapa Māori, mana Māori and mātauranga Māori in her work. Tanea is particularly interested in the importance of and care for the student journey.

NGĀ WHAKARĀKEI O WHĀTAITAI 2018 The Wellington Theatre Awards Wellington’s theatre industry assembled at the Amokura Gallery, Te Papa on the evening of Sunday 9 December to honour theatrical achievements and artistic excellence in 2018. The celebrations centred on the theme of Our Voice, honouring 125 years of women’s suffrage. The evening began with a karanga and mihi led Toni Huata and Tānemahuta Gray. A roaring waiata of ‘Tutira Mai Ngā Iwi’ by the whole room of 300 guests followed, starting the night off – and ended the formalities – with a sense of unity and collective pride.* This year’s awards were hosted with warmth and generosity of spirit by new MC Jo Randerson, artistic director of Barbarian Productions. Jo spoke to the inclusivity, fairness and support sought by the passionate community of theatre practitioners in the capital.

SEARCH BEGINS FOR NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT AUCKLAND THEATRE COMPANY Auckland Theatre Company (ATC) today announced that Richard Evans of cultural advisors, REĂ Consulting, has been engaged to assist with the search for the Company’s new Chief Executive. Outgoing Chief Executive Lester McGrath has resigned to take up the position of Executive Director at the Royal New Zealand Ballet and will leave ATC at the beginning of next year, having led the company for nearly twelve years.

DUNEDIN THEATRE AWARDS SET TO SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT Finalists have been announced for the 2018 Dunedin Theatre Awards. The annual Awards celebration, in its 9th year, is to be held at Hanover Hall on Monday 10th December. This beautiful ex-church building is well-known to Dunedin as previously being several nightclubs. Over the past couple of years it has been transformed into the home of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, and was acknowledged as a fine new addition to the performance spaces of Dunedin at last year’s Awards.
