THE PERFORMANCE ARCADE 2020 CALL FOR PROPOSALS The Performance Arcade announces its open call to artists from New Zealand and around the world for its 2020 programme of works (20 February - 1 March). This annual exhibition and programme of events located on Wellington Waterfront is recognized as an important platform for live art, with ten successful presentations over the past eight years. This hybrid gallery/ stage architecture is made from an assembly of shipping containers to create a series of spaces for installation, performance art, sonic art, interactive media, video-art, forums, theatre, dance, and live music.

PLAYMARKET’S 2019 PLAYWRIGHTS B4 25 WINNER COURTNEY ROSE BROWN A NAME TO WATCH After being highly commended for three years running, young playwright Courtney Rose Brown has taken the top prize in Playmarket’s 2019 Playwrights b4 25 competition, with her play Breathless. The 24-year-old was not able to make the award ceremony held at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, on Tuesday as she was at the opening night for her play Running Late at BATS Theatre in Wellington, confirming that this playwright’s career is already on the move.

MORE NZ WORK FROM OUR PROFESSIONAL COMPANIES PLAYMARKET has again carried out research into works being staged by professional theatres in 2018. The results paint a healthy picture of New Zealand productions on our stages with increases in NZ work, work by Māori practitioners and works by NZ women writers and theatremakers. Of the 241 works produced professionally in our theatres 84% of them were New Zealand works, up from 79% in 2017. Seven companies created seasons of 100% NZ work. Works by women accounted for 58% of the nationwide total, up from 52% in 2017 while works by NZ women totalled 51%.

TOI WHAKAARI INTERIM DIRECTOR ANNOUNCED The Toi Whakaari Board has just announced that acclaimed actor and arts manager Tanea Heke (Ngā Puhi) will be Interim Director of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School for the first months of 2019, following Christian Penny’s resignation last month. Tanea has a rare and critical set of skills, experience and networks. She brings a strategic view, a highly developed set of operational skills and industry networks, and, at the heart of these, a commitment to upholding kaupapa Māori, mana Māori and mātauranga Māori in her work. Tanea is particularly interested in the importance of and care for the student journey.
