NGĀ WHAKARĀKEI O WHĀTAITAI 2018 The Wellington Theatre Awards Wellington’s theatre industry assembled at the Amokura Gallery, Te Papa on the evening of Sunday 9 December to honour theatrical achievements and artistic excellence in 2018. The celebrations centred on the theme of Our Voice, honouring 125 years of women’s suffrage. The evening began with a karanga and mihi led Toni Huata and Tānemahuta Gray. A roaring waiata of ‘Tutira Mai Ngā Iwi’ by the whole room of 300 guests followed, starting the night off – and ended the formalities – with a sense of unity and collective pride.* This year’s awards were hosted with warmth and generosity of spirit by new MC Jo Randerson, artistic director of Barbarian Productions. Jo spoke to the inclusivity, fairness and support sought by the passionate community of theatre practitioners in the capital.

SEARCH BEGINS FOR NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT AUCKLAND THEATRE COMPANY Auckland Theatre Company (ATC) today announced that Richard Evans of cultural advisors, REĂ Consulting, has been engaged to assist with the search for the Company’s new Chief Executive. Outgoing Chief Executive Lester McGrath has resigned to take up the position of Executive Director at the Royal New Zealand Ballet and will leave ATC at the beginning of next year, having led the company for nearly twelve years.

DUNEDIN THEATRE AWARDS SET TO SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT Finalists have been announced for the 2018 Dunedin Theatre Awards. The annual Awards celebration, in its 9th year, is to be held at Hanover Hall on Monday 10th December. This beautiful ex-church building is well-known to Dunedin as previously being several nightclubs. Over the past couple of years it has been transformed into the home of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, and was acknowledged as a fine new addition to the performance spaces of Dunedin at last year’s Awards.

CHRISTIAN PENNY RESIGNS AS DIRECTOR OF TOI WHAKAARI: NZ DRAMA SCHOOL AFTER SEVEN YEARS With sadness, the Board of Trustees of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School has accepted the resignation of Director Christian Penny. Penny took over the leadership of the school in 2011 after more than nine years as Head of Directing. Prior to that, he had been a successful freelance theatre director and co-director of the company Theatre at Large. Board chair Tim Walker praised Penny’s contribution as Director: “Christian has played a defining role in the development of Toi Whakaari. It is impossible to imagine the school being the exceptional learning organisation it is today without the brave and insightful leadership he has provided over the past seven years.

Open Call – Worldwide Tender THEATERTREFFEN STÜCKEMARKT 2019 by Berliner Festspiele Where are the artists who turn the rules, forms and aesthetics of the theatre upside down, challenge them, think differently and develop new texts, forms and formats? Under the heading “What happens after the protest?” Stückemarkt is searching for work that goes beyond descriptions of a status quo, imagines possi­ble futures and seeks new forms of artistic-activist interference. For the first time Stückemarkt is asking artists worldwide to submit work addressing questions that go further than romanticizing revolts but rather pursue the question of what other worlds could possibly look like.

WELLINGTON SUMMER SHAKESPEARE AUDITIONS Performers are invited to audition for roles in the Wellington Summer Shakespeare production of Hamlet to be staged in the Botanical Gardens in February 2019. Please note: This audition process is for general auditions – i.e. all other characters in the play – the role of Hamlet has already been cast. Hamlet is being played by Stevie Hancox-Monk with a mixed gender cast. This will be a contemporary, ensemble-based production directed by David O’Donnell, award-winning director, author, lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington and the first person to direct a Summer Shakespeare in the Botanical Gardens in 1990.
