TARANAKI ARTS FESTIVAL 2015

Production Details

Multi-instrumentalist Adam Page is the ultimate improviser, who has even been known to use his beard to make music.

Using a loop machine, he creates layer upon layer of sound.
He does beat-boxing, plays percussion instruments, guitars, keyboard, jazz and harmony flutes, saxophone and uses his voice.

Along with creating a masterful mash-up of sound, this comedic and sometimes contemplative all-rounder plays a mixture of musical genres, from light-hearted loops to Radiohead on saxophone.

Page has won multiple awards worldwide and played festivals everywhere, including the Edinburgh Fringe, Glastonbury and the Big Day Out.

Infectious passion and enthusiasm

Review by Ngaire Riley 21st Aug 2015

Festivals are a time to step into unfamiliar areas and so here I am at a lunchtime bites music performance by Adam Page.

A show of hands at the start tells him that about half the audience have heard /seen /shared a performance with him before. It’s an eclectic audience, more brown heads than grey, and the age range is from two to about seventy two. Clearly those who know him have come back for more.

Page radiates a relaxed, infectious passion for his musical style. By employing looping pedals, he creates and builds symphonic pieces of most enjoyable sound /shape /music.

He employs an eclectic mix of resources as his raw material, including his clothing, his breath, his beard, a triangle, percussion pieces, gamelan-type bamboo, a tiny base guitar, a flute and best of all a saxophone. He builds the compositions by layering in riffs, melodies and rhythms. He is not a small man and yet there is a delightful lightness to the way he ‘dances’ while managing the pedals which record, replay and select parts of what he is making.

Page is a relaxed raconteur as well as a musician. He tells us that when he is creating his music he goes to his ‘happy place’ where he could exist for hours. Unlike many musicians whose personality seems to disappear into their instrument, Page radiates pleasure and delight through his music making. At one stage he creates a piece from the name of an audience member and with infectious enthusiasm tells us that “it’s going really well”. This man is creative, clever, highly skilled at his craft and able to relate warmly to his audience.

The sunlight is pouring through the high prism windows of the Spiegeltent this Thursday lunchtime and when I look around there is a focussed stillness in the audience. Everyone is smiling, soft smiles. Even the babies.

At one stage Page talks about and demonstrates what he likes about the acoustics in this curious circular tent. And that’s the thing about Adam Page, he is able to see and explore wherever he is with the wide eyed wonder of a child and the skilled sophistication of a very accomplished musician.

If you get the chance, join him for an Adam Page experience.
