Dunedin Fringe 2016

Production Details

The Best Of Scottish Comedy returns after a sell out run at 2015 Dunedin Fringe. Bruce Fummey and Vladimir McTavish loved Dunedin so much they had to come back. Local gangs cutting grass, parking tickets for facing the wrong direction and a glorious Highlander season. You don’t get that in Scotland.

Best of Scotland II is another hilarious 60-minute show of world-class comedy for Scots and decedents of Scots alike. Top stand ups from the Scottish comedy circuit bring more side splitting observations of Scottish life and the world at large.

Vladimir McTavish was nominated top Scottish headliner 2014 and his 2014 Edinburgh Fringe show was named Best Fringe Show at the Scottish Comedy Awards. Bruce Fummey was named Scottish Comedian of the Year 2014 and his Edinburgh Fringe shows in 2014 and 2015 were nominated for Best Fringe shows at the Scottish Comedy Awards.

Both Fummey and McTavish enjoyed top selling runs at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe. They have also performed at festivals in Australia, USA, Singapore, Denmark and Norway. They have played to international audiences in Dubai, Malaysia, Bahrain, The Netherlands, Hungary and Cyprus.

The Best Of Scottish Comedy is an eclectic mix of comic styles. McTavish has an affable yet hard-edged style and been described as “Scotland’s top satirical stand-up”, McTavish was also nominated as Top Headliner in 2014 Scottish Comedy Awards. Fummey’s high-energy act delights in his status as “the finest act on the Afro-Celtic comedy circuit.

Vladimir McTavish “Nothing short of superb” The Scotsman
“For his intelligence and showmanship, this is compulsory viewing” The List
“Harder-edged stand-out stand-up” Rip It Up (Adelaide)
Bruce Fummey “…put simply, he is a very, very funny man.” – The Skinny (Edinburgh Fringe)
“A natural storyteller, Fummey is such an amiable character that you can’t help but get swept up by his stories” – Three Weeks
“You will be hard-pressed to find a more engaging performer on the Fringe than Bruce Fummey, do go and see this show.” – Chortle Coarse Language.

Polished and slick

Review by Nick Tipa 04th Mar 2016

Best of Scottish Comedy at the Fortune Theatre is a night well spent. Bruce Fummey and Vladimir McTavish keep the laughs rolling and at times have me, for one, almost in tears.

Fummey kicks off the night, welcoming the audience into the space and going on to ask if we have any other Scots in the house. A couple of hands rise above grinning faces and their owners are playfully berated by Fummey for being from not-so-nice areas. This is met with laughs and smiles from the audience members in question. The night is off to a good start.

Fummey goes on to discuss racism when he was growing up, private schools, and his time as a physics teacher. By the end of his set, the audience feels as if they have got to know Fummey personally, and we are sad to see him go.

McTavish follows. I find his style of comedy a little less engaging than Fummey’s as he comes across as more withdrawn. He also doesn’t delve as far into audience interaction as I would like. However, there is a great amount of appreciation for his work and one of his last segments, involving the props (go see the show and you’ll find out), is extremely entertaining.

Fummey’s personal brand of humour has won me over more than McTavish’s, due to his crowd interaction and jest (definitely sit in the front row), but the audience enjoys each in their own turn. On the whole, their timing is polished and slick, and the Dunedin audience receives their brands of humour particularly well.

If you’re looking for something to do on the 4th or 5th of March, and you’d like a bit of laugh, you shouldn’t miss Bruce Fummey and Vladimir McTavish’s Best of Scottish Comedy ll.
