A disarming celebration of animal ardour
Review by Margaret Austin 03rd May 2017
Billed as “a comedy show for anyone who has ever loved or been loved by an animal”, Best Friends at BATS’ Propeller Stage features Brendon Green and his childhood memories.
His Dad’s concern for his son’s welfare, in sharp contrast with his Mum’s more realistic attitude, is to blame for the mess he’s in, he tells us. Family reminiscences usually make for humour, and this show is no exception. Effective build ups to punch lines help.
Brendon is best friends with Tilly, his girlfriend’s cat. He likes the cat almost better than the girl. Cats are introverted, artistic and intellectual, we are informed. This one’s status as an SPCA rescued animal enhances its appeal. Thus he dedicates his three ensuing anecdotes to Tilly.
Perhaps surprisingly, the stories have a serious twist – mitigated, however, by humorous diversions into Uber drivers, toenail parings, and the 15 names which, given his surname, he’s going to be able to offer his children.
An audience member confesses to owning five dogs, which launches Brendon into his last story – a canine one.
Best Friends is a disarming celebration of animal ardour.
