HONEY, HE’S LOBBOTTOMISED THE KIDS…
More than a man with a microphone, ‘Laugh You Long Time’ is a quirky take on stand-up; Grant Lobban style. Comedy veteran and Billy T Award nominee Grant meshes pre-recorded audio visual material with his real-time act to create a unique one-of-a-kind comedy show.
Drawing on the kind of everyday experience most of us would rather forget as soon as it happens, Grant has a knack for pulling the fascinating guts out of the less glamorous parts of life. Flatmates, ex-girlfriends, family, workmates and people in the street all come under the peculiar and warped microscope of the Lobban eye, spattering out on stage as little gobs of comedy genius. Swaying between the fantastically banal and oh-so-familiar aspects of modern living and the utterly twisted outer reaches of Grant’s own reality, Laugh You Long Time showcases his skill for acute observation and comedic intuition. Both the crassness of a Greymouth upbringing and the subtle intellect of a very keen mind take the audience on a ride through a day in the life of someone living in a very different world…
Twice nominated for the prestigious Billy T Comedy Award (2007, 2008) Lobban has spent a decade honing his skills since humble beginnings as a theatre restaurant chef. A chance meeting with the (then unknown) Rhys Darby led to the two of them forming comic duo ‘Rhysently Granted’. The resulting successful musical comedy act was a mainstay of the South Island comedy scene for 3 years, with hundreds of gigs played all over the mainland which birthed such famous comedy songs as ‘Jandals’ and ‘Mrs Whippy’. Since then his solo career has seen him hone his skills and become one of the most well-liked comics on the local circuit, earning him several Green Room awards, winner RAW Comedy Competition (2001) and Best New Face in the Comedy Guild Awards (2001) as well as the occasional local and international TV commercials.

Insane and twisted but hilarious
Review by Jessie Kollen 08th May 2008
Picture the Comedy Classic Studio under its painted attic roof, the previous act has run overtime, so the small crowd gathers late and the bar calls for last drinks.
Enter Grant Lobban. A qualified baker, smoker, poet, Olympian and police impersonator… From Christchurch.
At first he is sweating, and at times throughout the show he pauses to remember his material, a performance that would have been vastly improved if he had memorised everything. Yet that doesn’t seem to matter so much, because his comedy is hilarious. Insane and twisted, but hilarious!
Laugh You Long Time is the show’s title, I’m still laughing and it’s Grant Lobban’s impressions I’m still giggling over. The highlights of his humour are the voices he does and the expressions on his face, so really, you do have to see Grant Lobban to believe him.
