Reminiscent of a sulky teenage girl
Review by Venus Stephens 13th May 2009
Hannah Gadsby is bloody hilarious.
Reflecting on the way I described things before I became a reviewer, I have decided to reclaim my use of popular Kiwi colloquialisms.
It is fitting, seeing Ms Gadsby is Australian and the Aussies have a catalogue of colourful expressions that are uniquely their own… plus we ‘share’ a couple in our Anzac unison.
Comedians can reveal so much of their personal lives in an hour and Hannah Gadsby has no shortage of material fuelled by her life so far. We are ‘visited’ by her motherthroughout the night, not physically you understand; but through the retelling of ‘endearing moments’ and language that only Mothers use.
Awesome fodder for one’s child to skew into a L.O.L showcase. (I’m sorry… I’m lazy, that’s Laugh out Loud abbreviated for those not txt lingo inclined).
Hannah Gadsby will have you in the palm of her hand with her monotone prose and fidgety body language reminiscent of a sulky teenage girl. She cements her quips about her home city and other ‘destinations’ on the globe by choosing a random audience member, who she ‘checks’ the propriety of her comments with.
Sexuality and injuries, it’s all covered in a way that alludes to the sense that she is confirming to the world she is happy with herself, just the way she is.
That’s it really.
She’s ‘bloody funny’ – Kiwi/Aussie.
A real ‘crack up’ – Kiwi/Aussie
Her stories will have you pissing your pants… (the Aussies can have that one).
