From 8 to 12 March, Auckland’s Civic theatre will be transformed into a city where breakdancing, trial biking, contortion and in-line skating are a way of life. This is the playground of iD.

They’ve wowed audiences all over the world and now Cirque Éloize, performing their astonishing contemporary circus, will transport Auckland crowds to a vibrant urban streetscape and universe, performed on a spectacular multi-level set backed by digital projections.

Cirque Éloize’s iD is a blend of circus arts and urban dance: b-boying and b-girling, breakdance and hip-hop. The scene is the heart of a city; a place where identity is forged and individuality is expressed.

Accompanied by an energising soundtrack by composers Jean-Phi Goncalves (Beast) and Alex McMahon, 15 performers from over 13 disciplines, hailing from many different countries, juggle, spin, skate, bike, balance, contort and fly their way through an eye-watering parade of tricks. Everything builds towards iD’s famous trampowall finale.

The show is directed by Cirque Éloize’s Founder and Artistic Director, Jeannot Painchaud. Having started his career as a performing artist and street performer, Painchaud has worked with many circus companies and multidisciplinary artistic troupes. With over 23 years’ experience in the new arts circus, he has made Cirque Éloize one of the world leaders in contemporary circus movement.

Positioned at the heart of a revival of circus arts, Cirque Éloize has been creating moving performances filled with magic and emotion since 1993. Drawing on the multidisciplinary talents of its performers, the company expresses its innovative nature through theatricality and humanity, and combines circus arts with music, dance and theatre in path-breaking and original ways.

With eleven original productions to its credit, Cirque Éloize has presented more than 4,000 performances at over 500 cities in more than 50 different countries. The company recently celebrated the 1000th performance of iD having reached over 1 million audience members. Cirque Éloize has taken part in numerous prestigious international festivals and its shows have seduced Broadway and the West End. Now, it’s Auckland’s turn.

Circus arts light up concrete jungle

Review by Dione Joseph 10th Mar 2017

Cirque Eloize’s iD is explosive – gone are the days of ringed arenas and big tops, sad animals and tinny music. This is circus at its most modern complete with international performers who excel in circus arts, hip hop and B-boying, in-line skating and bike work.

Jeannot Painchaud is both president and co-founder of Cirque Eloize and under his masterful direction, 15 artists showcase 10 circus disciplines in under two hours.

Aerial acrobatics, impressive Cyr Wheel and Chinese Pole work, contortion, juggling and extraordinary feats of strength come in quick and dizzying bouts; it’s clear there is no shortage of awe and wonder under the stars of the Civic theatre. [More

A playful, surprising, exciting spectacle

Review by Heidi North 09th Mar 2017

Modern Cirque-style performance meets hip hop dance, meets urban streetscapes in this energetic show from Canadian company Cirque Eloize. The high voltage company under the direction of Jeannot Painchaud has been around 24 years, taking their brand of crowd-pleasing performances all over the world. This is their first time in New Zealand.

iD starts with a loose narrative structure: two rival street gangs battling it out with a nod to West Side Story. The narrative quickly falls away as the show progresses, but that’s unimportant. What’s important here is the fabulous feats of thrilling acrobatic skill.

The interweaving performances are slick. The impressive feats of the 15 performers from around the world are set off with a multimedia backdrop and costuming drawing on graffiti art.

The show is hyper urban and great fun. There’s the more traditional cirque skills – contortion, Chinese pole, aerial hoop, with more surprising BMX tricks, rollerblading and inventive juggling thrown in. The show is studded with quirky humour; the kids in the audience love every minute of it. The trampowall finale is a wonderful visual surprise.

iD is a playful, surprising, exciting spectacle.
