Unique and dynamic Kiwi crowd pleaser keeps audience guessing.

Review by Sophie Ricketts 22nd Jan 2024

Ōtautahi is once again turning it on for the best summer festival around. I look forward to the Buskers Festival every year and the 2024 lineup has a knockout list of great acts and some exciting new venues.

Despite the first day of the festival having a bumpy start (due to heat and wind affecting the inflatable Arborialis Luminarium), the Friday night performance from Jarred Fell is an absolute crowd pleaser. I’ve seen Jarred in perform in two past festivals (2018 and 2021) and he brings his signature slickness and silliness in full display. More than a comedian, more than a magician, it is hard to put Jarred in a box as he could equally be described as your new best friend, freaky nightmare, or wet dream. He returns with a flourish to tell us crass jokes, make inappropriate gestures with props and blow our minds with his incredible skills. His wit is razor sharp, and he tosses out one liners with the precision of darts hitting a bullseye.

There is a little bit of recycled material I recognise from his previous shows, HACKED and AGAIN, but with so many new fresh gags and tricks it didn’t bother me in the slightest. Each time you think you might have figured out how he does it… he manages to keep you guessing. And I suppose that is the message he’s trying to convey in this new show, BELIEF. He’s making us question what it is we all believe in, or what it is that we’re willing to believe in. I love that for all his crassness and envelope-pushing in the show, he still displays real love for his mum, real gratitude for his sobriety, and truly enjoys making connections with the audience all throughout the show.

In my opinion, the best thing about the Christchurch Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival is that you can see performers from all over the world at the peak of their craft right here in the centre of our beautiful city. It was awesome to see a kiwi who is doing something so unique, and so dynamic, on the festival’s opening night. Judging by the pattern, get ready to book your tickets to see him again in 2027.
