Production Details

Written, produced and performed by EJ Mann.

MAGPIE is EJ Mann’s debut musical comedy show, which she is performing for one night only at Good Times Comedy Club, Christchurch on October 4.

The musical comedian from Brisbane talks (and sings) about her hilarious year of living like one of Australia’s most annoying birds – the very proud and very fearless magpie – and what it means to come out as a lesbian in 2024.

There’s an escort, there’s a wedding, and there’s a heartfelt twist.

EJ has made a name for herself on the Brisbane scene as a RAW State Finalist, Funny Coast Laughable Finalist, and Brat Pack People’s Choice Winner.

MAGPIE will show for one night only,

Polished, funny: an exciting new voice to watch

Review by Lauren Douglas 05th Oct 2024

Performing to an intimate audience at Good Times Comedy Club, Brisbane-based musical comedian EJ Mann’s debut show, Magpie, talks about her year of living like a magpie.

So what does living like a magpie mean? EJ describes it as being bold, proud and fearless. She shares her journey from leaving a 10-year relationship with a man and dating women for the first time, to starting stand-up comedy, and everything that has come with it.

She mixes story telling with clever comedy songs, balancing dry humour with fresh perspective.

Sharing anecdotes about her bogan community Facebook page, Uber drivers, superheroes and bad dates, EJ is an engaging performer. Without giving too much away, there are a lot of laugh out loud moments, and good balance between stories and songs.

Throughout the hour, EJ shares her experience coming out as a lesbian to her family, particularly her grandparents. No spoilers, but I do leave feeling a little more hopeful about the world.

It’s revealed at the end, that this is EJ’s first time performing this show, and I certainly wouldn’t have known otherwise. It’s polished, funny, and she’s an exciting new voice to watch.
