A joyful and inventive ode to the stage

Review by Deborah Eve Rea 21st Nov 2024

Tempest Theatre Co has done it again, delivering a unique and playful experience with Marc & Marisha Time Travel the Theatre. This self-guided audio walking tour combines history, humour and a touch of chaos, inviting audiences to discover the secrets of Wellington’s heritage theatres in a way that is as enlightening as it is entertaining.

Last year’s Marc & Marisha Time Travel Wellington tour may have gone slightly (okay, wildly) off course, but this year, Marc (Hamish Boyle) and Marisha (Emma Maguire) are back, proving that time-traveling tour guides can only get better—or at least more amusing. Starting at BATS Theatre and weaving down Courtenay Place, the tour unfolds through witty narration and colourful anecdotes, immersing listeners in the theatrical history of Wellington. Whether you’re walking the route or enjoying the experience from home, the production ensures you feel part of the journey.

Emma Maguire’s dual role as writer and director shines, blending sharp humour with a genuine love for the theatre. Their performance as Marisha sparkles with charisma, matched perfectly by Boyle’s delightfully flustered and endearing Marc. Together, they create a dynamic duo that keeps listeners laughing while subtly educating them about Wellington’s rich cultural past.

The ensemble cast is a bit of a Wellington theatre history chapter itself, including Shaun Swain, Booth, Bea Lee Smith, Ewan Coleman, Felicity Cozens, Hayden Frost, Ruby Kemp, Bethany Miller and Isaac Hooper. The cast bring a kaleidoscope of voices and personalities to the production. Their cameos as various historical figures and quirky characters add depth and variety, transforming Wellington’s theatre district into a living, breathing time capsule.

The self-guided format is a stroke of genius, offering flexibility and accessibility. The production caters to everyone—from locals curious about their city’s theatrical roots to theatre enthusiasts from afar. The audio instructions are clear, and the engaging storytelling keeps you hooked, whether you’re exploring in person or simply listening from your couch.

There are at least a few factual errors that I spotted. Perhaps one of our Wellington Theatre historians could have served as dramaturg. Although Fran Walsh/Wilde could be a slip of the tongue/script. They are both pretty great Frans, but the former is the BATS building owner and the latter once gave BATS a cat and a lot of love and support. What ever happened to Phoenix, Marc and Marisha?

What truly sets Marc and Marisha Time Travel the Theatre apart is its blend of whimsy and heart. It celebrates Wellington’s theatrical legacy while inviting audiences to laugh, reflect, and maybe even dream about the stories yet to be told.

Tempest Theatre Co. has crafted a joyful and inventive ode to the stage with this production. For anyone seeking a charming and unconventional way to experience Wellington’s arts history, Marc and Marisha Time Travel the Theatre is an absolute must.
