Mary (just your local Christchurch bogan barista) and Joseph (just your local boyracer who works at Mitre 10) are thinking of buying a cat to really cement their perfect lifestyle out at Woodend when suddenly— oh no! God’s made her pregnant! Not only that but Mayor Mauger has ordered everyone back to their home suburbs for a census, so it’s time for her and Joseph to make the trek back to the little town of Beckenham.

Unique Christmas comedy serves up laughs with a local flavour
Review by Sophie Ricketts 06th Dec 2024
The annual Christmas show at Little Andromeda has become its own end-of-year tradition, and this year it’s as packed with laughs as it is with local flavour. O Little Town of Beckenham is a unique Christmas comedy offering a fresh spin on the nativity story, set right here in Christchurch and serving up plenty of laughs.
From the get-go, the play sets the tone with its brilliant blend of suburban satire. Mary, our local bogan barista, and Joseph, the boyracer working at Mitre 10, are faced with the unexpected news that they’re expecting – a message delivered directly from high above. You can’t help but chuckle as their plans to take their relationship to the next level face a surprising twist from God, all while they navigate life in Woodend and the inevitable drama of their fateful journey across town to Beckenham.
But it’s the play’s satire that truly steals the spotlight. The political humor hits home, poking fun at both local and national figures. Mayor Mauger’s census order is almost as ridiculous as his comb-over and the appearance of figures like the three “wise” men adds just the right amount of cheeky commentary on New Zealand’s political landscape.
The ensemble cast of James Kupa, Reylene Rose Hilaga and Daniel Allan are absolutely stellar. Their physical comedy and over the top characters are tonnes of fun, with the costumes and props enhancing the humour every step of the way. Michael Bell’s music creates a lovely link throughout, and some well-timed LMFAO moments tie it all together.
The show reminds me of a British pantomime, with all the local references layered onto a well-known story and the jokes veering from slightly silly to downright absurd. O Little Town of Beckenham is the perfect end-of-year treat for anyone looking for a laugh-out-loud, irreverent Christmas experience. My companion and I didn’t laugh ’til we cried, like we did last year, but we both had a fantastic time.
