Delicious, unforgettable … and on only once

Review by CHLOE JAQUES 15th Jul 2024

An acrobat, hula-hooper, singer, drag queen, MC and clown walk into a bar… It’s certainly a recipe for a really divine evening. Escape the mundane and immerse yourself in the world of Revel.

A wildly flamboyant and booming Saturday evening, it’s like walking into a great new world. It’s giving The Greatest Showman meets Burlesque. The band (Skram) is up stage blasting classics in a really chic way and the bartenders are shaking deluxe cocktails with their eyes closed.

Hannah Playhouse has been completely reinvented with sparkly lights, a lush red curtain at the back of the stage and the obvious Revel signage. I almost feel like I’m elsewhere. Audience members come dressed to impress and the sooner we sit the more we get to savour the band’s talents.

This next group of performers are certainly impressive. From the belting lungs of the strong singer (Jade Merematira) to the acrobat hanging from the ceiling spinning and flipping fiercely (Kiera Fitzgerald), I can’t help but think, damn, maybe I am in Paris? Or Berlin, like the cheeky MC (Nino Raphael) so confidently implies the show has toured from. Round and round, the hula hooping master (Laura Oakley) blows us all away whilst the drag queen (Selina Simone) dazzles with extensive costumes and technically sweet lip-syncing.

The evening is a complete joy to watch. My stand out of the night is, of course, ‘Boof’. A cheerful and slightly awkward clowning mime character (Booth) that had the audience eating out of the palm of their hand. A truly captivating performer that knows how to get the laughs and keep the show flowing with ease.

Revel is a one hit wonder show, meaning the cast and crew have only done a one show season. For the amount of work, talent and time that went into creating this fabulous show, it seems wild to me that it’s only performed once. But in this economy, who knows. It was magic, regardless, and I’m sure if there were to be a longer season, the show’s technical issues and slightly shaky performers would iron out their kinks and hit us all with that complete confidence bang I was so yearning for.

Congratulations Revel on a delicious evening of unforgettable entertainment!
