The BEEGEES SMASH HIT MUSICAL
The show focuses on Tony Manero, a Brooklyn youth whose weekend is spent at the local discotheque. There he luxuriates in the admiration of the crowd and a growing relationship with Stephanie Mangano, and can temporarily forget the realities of his life, including a dead-end job in a paint store and his gang of deadbeat friends.
When John Travolta walked on to the dance floor in the smash hit film Saturday Night Fever, it changed the way we dance forever.
The date is 1976 and in Brooklyn, New York, Tony Manero, a young man with a dead-end job and an extraordinary ability to dance, has only one ambition in life – to become the disco king. When he meets Stephanie, who also dreams of a world beyond Brooklyn, and they decide to train together for a dance competition, their lives begin to change forever.
This brand new production of Saturday Night Fever, one of the most loved dance stories of all time, is packed with legendary hits from the Bee Gees including the classics ‘Stayin’ Alive’, ‘Night Fever’, ‘Jive Talking’, ‘You Should Be Dancing’ and ‘How Deep is Your Love’.

Showbiz Queenstown has just completed the NZ premier season of the Bee Gees’ musical Saturday Night Fever based on the film and including such hits as ‘Stayin’ Alive’, ‘Night Fever’, ‘You Should Be Dancing’ and‘How Deep is Your Love’.
As their publicity says: “When John Travolta walked on to the dance floor in the smash hit film Saturday Night Fever, it changed the way we dance forever.”
The show tells the story of Tony Manero, an Italian American living with his family in Brooklyn in 1976. He spends his weekends at the local discotheque revelling in the admiration he gets from the crowd for his dancing. Soon he meets Stephanie Mangano, who also dreams of a world beyond Brooklyn, and they train together for a dance competition.
It’s a great show. Who doesn’t love the energy of Staying Alive complete with the costumes, music and dancing?
Cameron Mason in the lead role is superb; particularly his dancing. It’s an impressive performance and Mason is on stage for all but one scene. He is matched by a strong performance from Tiffany Mitchell has Stephanie Mangano.
Marty Newell perfectly captures the role of Monty, the disco DJ, and steals the show on occasion.
The dancing and passion of the ensemble cast is phenomenal.
The set design is innovative, quickly switching from the Manero family home, Tony’s room, the dance studio and the disco with many stunning shots of the Brooklyn Bridge in the background, depicting the bridge at different times of day and in different light.
The lighting design is effective making you feel like you’ve been transported to a disco.
The show’s only weakness is parts of the singing but other than Mason this is an amateur cast who should be proud of their performance.
All in all, Showbiz Queenstown’s Saturday Night Fever is a brilliant effort for a local musical theatre group. It’s an entertaining night out.
