Well-formed, fantastically feral work, wholeheartedly enjoyable
Review by Emma Maguire 21st Feb 2022
A delightfully frenzied talk show, The Jack and Annie Show is an hour of eccentric comedy, created by two Australian performers, Jack Evans and Annie Schofield. Winners of the 2021 NZ Fringe Tour Ready Award, you can watch this show from the comfort of your own home in its digital edition this NZ Fringe.
Jack and Annie have fantastic comical chemistry, riffing off one another throughout the entire show. It’s thoroughly enjoyable to watch two people just get on really well on stage, through bouts of screaming, musical numbers (there’s a lot of singing in this show – and the songs really are earworms) and moments of dance.
It is a very professional talkshow. With segments! (Sort of.) And guests! (Sort of.) And good advice! (That one’s a little questionable.) From how to approach gorgeous men in a bar, to filthy letters, absurdist sponsors and a lot of gambolling around the stage, the chaos does not let up in this hour-long work, and neither do the performances. Both performers have excellent stage presence and a furiously camp energy, emblazoned with sequined blazers and bow ties.
The Jack and Annie Show is so joyous and so chaotic that it far transcends the digital medium it’s placed in – I laugh along out loud in my house – and it is an instant brightener of one’s day. What a well-formed, fantastically feral work. Wholeheartedly enjoyable.
